Experiments on Forming Intense Rings of Electrons Suitable for the Acceleration of Ions

Description: Electrons were injected from a 3.3-MeV 300-A accelerator into a circular orbit in a pulsed magnetic field. Trapped ring currents of 150 A (4 x 10{sup 12} electrons) were magnetically compressed from 19 cm to 3.5 cm radii and simultaneously accelerated from 3.3 MeV to 18 MeV in energy. The rms dimensions of the cross section of the ring after compression were a = 2.3 {+-} 0.2 mm radially and b = 1.6 {+-} 0.2 mm axially. The lifetime of the ring was typically 5.5 msec, and was determined by the d… more

ABIOGENIC INFORMATION COUPLING BETWEEN NUCLEIC ACID AND PROTEIN,OR, HOW PROTEIN AND DNA WERE MARRIED

Description: There is now experimental evidence for selectivity between the amino acid and the nucleic acid base which is the beginning of the chemical translation process from one linear system to the other. The linear system of the nucleic acid is, of course, an excellent place to store the information, whereas the linear system of the polypeptide, on the other hand, is the versatile system which can perform many different types of reactions but is unable to store information reliably. The experiments the… more

NOBELIUM: TRACER CHEMISTRY OF THE DIVALENT AND TRI-VALENTIONS

Description: In the absence of oxidizing or reducing agents the chromatographic and coprecipitation behavior of element 102 is similar to that of the alkaline earth elements. After oxidation with ceric ions, the behavior is that expected of a trivalent actinide. The conclusion is that nobelium is the first actinide for which the +2 oxidation state is the most stable species in aqueous solution.

The Electron-Ring Accelerator Program at Lrl

Description: A progress report is presented on the activities at LRL in connection with electron-ring accelerators. A two-stage compressor unit (employing only low-intensity beams) has been built, and operated with a 4-MeV 100-mA linac as an injector. Electron rings have been formed and compressed from 20 cm radius to 7 cm radius. A three-stage compression unit has been constructed and is now under test with the high intensity (200 A) 3.3-MeV beam of the Astron injector. The apparatus is described. Design w… more

CHARGE TRANSFER BETWEEN POSITIVE ALKALI IONS AND ATOMS

Description: The total cross sections for resonant charge exchange have been measured as a function of energy in the range from 10 to 500 eV for the Cs{sup +}-Cs, Rb{sup +}-Rb, and K{sup +}-K systems. The agreement with certain data obtained at higher energies for these systems, and with theoretical cross sections of Smirnov is satisfactory.

Monochromatic Cosmic Ray Deuterion Source

Description: The reaction pp {yields} {pi}{sup +}d resulting from the high energy cosmic rays incident on the interstellar hydrogen gas gives rise to secondary deuterons. Since the total cross section for this reaction is appreciable only at proton kinetic energies of 600 MeV, the deuterons have a very small spread in energy. It is estimated that the flux of deuterons from this mechanism should be easily discernible from deuterons produced by other reactions and copious enough to be detected at the earth. T… more
