Effect of heat treatment upon the microstructure and hardness of a wrought cobalt-base alloy stellite 21 (AMS 5385)

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the response of wrought Stellite 21, a typical cobalt-base alloy, to heat treatment. The alloy was solution-treated and transformed by aging and isothermal transformation at temperatures of 1200 to 1950 degrees Fahrenheit for periods of 5 minutes to 72 hours. Results regarding the solution-treated structure, precipitation by isothermal transformation, precipitation by aging, grain boundary behavior, and hardness are provided.

Fabrication and Properties of Extruded Silver-Cadmium Control Rods

Description: The production of cross-type control rods having a span of 4- 7/8 in., and an arm thickness of 1/8/ in., was studied. Extrusion techniques were developed for producing crosstype control rods from each of two alloys; one containing 75% silver-25% cadmium, and the other containing 67% silver-30% cadmium-3% copper. Coefficient of friction and damage to contact area during the early stages of fretting 2: steel, iron, iron oxide, and glass combinations

Description: Report presenting experiments to study the start of fretting and cause of damage during the early stages of fretting of steel-steel combinations at a frequency 5 cycles per minute, an amplitude of 0.006 inch, a load of 150 grams, in air with relative humidity of less than 10 percent. Pure iron, glass, and iron oxide powder compacts were used in supplementary experiments.

Relation of microstructure to high-temperature properties of a wrought cobalt-base alloy Stellite 21 (AMS 5385)

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of microstructure on the stress-rupture life of heat-treated wrought Stellite 21 under stress and temperature conditions comparable to those encountered during engine operation of turbine blades and to correlate with other microstructure properties. Trends of Rolling-Contact Bearings as Applied to Aircraft Gas-Turbine Engines

Description: Note presenting a review of the present and future trends of rolling-contact bearings for aircraft gas-turbine engines, which indicates that while rolling-contact bearings are satisfactory for present production engines, new bearings for future, higher output aircraft engines require more development. These new engines have operating conditions resulting in two primary problems: cage materials and endurance of materials for raceways and rolling elements.

Evaluation of Alloys for Vacuum Brazing of Sintered Wrought Molybdenum for Elevated-Temperature Applications

The Influence of a Precipitation Hardening Heat Treatment on the Hardness of Several Uranium-Molybdenum Alloys

Description: Four uranium alloys containing nominally 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 w/o molybdenum were investigated with respect to their response to hardening by heat treatment. Investigation of nickel-aluminum alloys containing from 14 to 34 percent aluminum

Description: Four irradiated tensile specimens were tested in the Radiometallurgy laboratory. The uranium was from a lot rolled at Simonds Saw and STeel Company, then beta heat treated by the triple dip process. The samples were irradiated to 310 MWD/AT. Friction of possible solid lubricants with various crystal structures

Description: Report presenting a number of possible solid lubricants with various crystal structures tested in a low-speed, high-load, friction apparatus under conditions of continuous sliding. None of the solids tested were as effective as MoS2 but were at least as effective as zinc stearate and graphite in these tests. Results regarding common lubricants, layer-lattice structure, and low-shear-strength solids without layer-lattice structure are provided.

A Further Investigation of the Effect of Surface Finish on Fatigue Properties at Elevated Temperatures

Description: Note presenting an investigation to evaluate the effects of surface roughness on fatigue properties of low-carbon N-155 alloy with a grain size of ASTM 6 and of S-816 alloy with a grain size of ASTM 6 to 7. Fatigue studies were conducted at 80, 1200, 1350, and 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. Results regarding those fatigue tests and the surface investigation are provided.
