High-Sensitivity Single-Molecule Fluorescence Detection in Theory and Practice

Description: The number of emitted photons that can be obtained from a fluorophore increases with the incident light intensity and the duration of illumination. However, saturation of the absorption transition and photodestruction place natural limits on the ultimate signal-to-noise ratio that can be obtained. Equations have been derived to describe the fluorescence-to-background-noise ratio in the presence of saturating light intensities and photodestruction. The fluorescence lifetime and the photodestruct… more

Estimates of SASE power in the short wavelength region

Description: Given a sufficiently bright electron beam, the self-amplified-spontaneous emission (SASE) can provide gigawatts of short wavelength coherent radiation. The advantages of SASE approach are that is requires neither optical cavity nor an imput seed laser. In this note, we estimate the peak power performance of SASE for wavelengths shorter than 1000 {Angstrom}. At each wavelength, we calculate the saturated power from a uniform parameter undulator and the enhanced power from a tapered undulator. Th… more

Dependence of secondary ion emission from organic material on the energy loss of the impacting heavy ion

Description: Samples of the amino acid valine were irradiated by 2.5 MeV-Ar, 0.8 MeV-Kr and 1.0 MeV Xe beams from the Argonne Dynamitron accelerator in order to study the energy distributions of ejected secondary ions. For Kr and Xe the nuclear stopping power exceeded the electronic stopping power by a factor 2 or 3, respectively, but the functional shape of the energy distributions and the mean ejection energies (0.9--1.4 eV) indicated that the molecular ions (M{plus minus}H){sup {plus minus}} are desorbed… more

Emission Characteristics of Tantalum, Tungsten, Rhenium, and Iridium in Plasma Diodes

Description: Experimental determinations of the ionic and electronic emission characteristics of Ta, W, Re, and lr cathodes in vapor thermionic converters are compared. It is shown that Ta provides superior thermal ionization qualities at high pressure compared with W, Re, and Lr. High electronic current densities may be obtained from Cs on Re and Cs on Ir at much lower Cs vapor pressures than from Ta or W. An over-all efficiency of 19% was achieved with a Re cathode at 2440 deg K. (auth)

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF CLAD UO$sub 2$ IN POTENTIAL MELTDOWN ENVIRONMENTS.

Description: Behavior of zirconium alloy clad UO{sub 2} fuel elements in steam and air at 100 deg C to the melting point of UO{sub 2} was studied. Heating tests of Zircaloy-4 tubes with internal pressure show that steam oxidation of the metal results in lower deformation rates, less deformation, and higher failure temperature. Air oxidation of Zircaloy-4 is erratic and occurs at a greater rate than in steam due to the reaction with N in the air. Rate-controlling mechanism for UO{sub 2} oxidation by steam is… more

Distortion of He emission lines after fast-ion collisions

Description: After excitation by fast ions (velocity = 2 to 5 au) the emission line profiles of doubly-excited helium atoms are observed to differ significantly from the normal shape of Beutler-Fano resonances. This difference is attributed to the Coulomb interaction between the emitted electron and the ion used to excite the atom. We explain the effect quantitatively with a simple classical model combined with a post-collision-interaction theory. 4 refs., 4 figs.

STUDIES OF THE SCINTILLATION PROCESS IN CsI(Tl)

Description: The scintillation response of CsI(Tl) crystals, having various thallium contents, was measured for excitation of the crystals by monoenergetic gamma rays, protons, and alpha particles. The investi gation was made to provide a test of some of the features of a theoretical model of the scintillation process in thallium-activated alkali iodides proposed by Murray and Meyer. In order to insure that the results obtained in this program would provide a critical test of the scintillation model, specia… more

Multigroup Calculations of Effective Delayed-Neutron Fractions, Prompt- Neutron Lifetime, and Related Kinetics Parameters. IBM-704 Program 1188/RE

Description: In the course of a recent study of kinetics parameters, it was found that RE-185, because of its limitations, was inadequate to handle the problems involved with the reactors considered. Program ll88/RE was written entirely independent of and is intended to make RE-185 obsolete. The multigroup calculations of primary interest performed by the code are as follows: the total effective delayed-neutron fraction and its distribution into six ' families'' which are characterized by their periods; the… more

Design of neutron streak camera for fusion diagnostics

Description: The D-T burn time for advanced laser-fusion targets is calculated to be very short, < 50 ps. We describe the design of a neutron streak camera of 16 ps resolving time that can be used to study the temporal history of fusion burn. The cathode of the neutron streak camera is sensitive to neutrons and is curved such that the difference in the neutron path lengths from a point source to various parts of the cathode is compensated by electron transit times within the streak tube. Thus the cathode ca… more

Influences of clouds and rain on the large-scale transport and deposition of sulfur

Description: This paper describes the application of a three-dimensional, global-scale Eulerian model with an explicit description of cloud and chemical processes. Simulation results describing the transport of sulfur from North America and Europe across the north Atlantic Ocean during a climatological July are presented. Wet deposition was found to contribute slightly more to total sulfur deposition than dry deposition, a feature explained by the large amounts of precipitation during this month. The wet de… more

Photoemission from solids: the transition from solid-state to atomic physics

Description: As the photon energy is increased, photoemission from solids undergoes a slow transition from solid-state to atomic behavior. However, throughout the energy range h..nu.. = 10 to 1000 eV or higher both types of phenomena are present. Thus angle-resolved photoemission can only be understood quantitatively if each experimenter recognizes the presence of band-structure, photoelectron diffraction, and photoelectron asymmetry effects. The quest for this understanding will build some interesting brid… more

Addition of bromine as a diagnostic gas to inertial confinement fusion target microspheres

Description: Currently, direct fuel rho r measurements on Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) targets by neutron activation of the argon tracer gas mixed with the DT fuel would require a 100 fold increase in neutron yield. Bromine, on the other hand, has excellent properties for neutron activation analysis at neutron yields of 10two' to 10/sup 8/, when present at an internal pressure of from 0.1 to 0.2 atmospheres. Bromine addition is accomplished in a 2 furnace system using the dried-gel method of microspher… more
