Transits élémentaires

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's "Transits élémentaires" ("Elementary Transits"). The piece is a question of a crossing that could be compared - very modestly - to that of Dante's Virgil. From fire through air, from central magma to the high layers of the atmosphere, the traveler crosses through then Alice's looking glass. The perception then becomes mental. At the formal level, the piece has five concave movements, all of unequal duration articulated by a constantly varied pattern, a sort of hin… more

Syntagmes

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's Syntagmes. This work obeys a double concern: formal rigor and vagrancy of the imagination. Seemingly contradictory proceedings, they are inspired by linguistic mechanisms which - within the limits of a code - allow innumerable discoveries.

Novars

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's Novars. This piece has fragments from Schaeffer's Etude aux objets (1959) and Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame (1364). These quotations, along with a third sound element - a sort of homage to the P. Henry's fashion and to his infamous door - are the sole materials giving birth to multiple variations. Novars was realized at Studio 123 of the INA-GRM ((France’s National Audiovisual Institue-Groupe de Recherches Musicales) and at the composer's studio and … more

En cuerdas

Description: Commissioned by the Colombian guitarist Arturo Parra, En Cuerdas is the acousmatic version of a work for guitar and tape. Completely independent from the version for guitar and tape, this piece is to be projected on an orchestra of loudspeakers and is an autonomous work. Its sonic environment however remains that of strings that are plucked, rubbed and struck, made virtual and transformed by computer processes and expanded by the use of "electroacoustic writing".

Lettre de Sarajevo

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's Lettre de Sarajevo. The composer dedicates the piece to the victims everywhere, despoiled, immolated, forgotten, with this to say: What else can we say about Sarajevo? Faced with the outbursts of triumphant cynicism, this time I could not content myself with the formal and aesthetic games so dear to the composer. Perhaps this musical narcissism, this elegant withdrawal, this haughty ignorance (misleading, no doubt, but after all…), they now seemed to me quite deri… more

Convulsive

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's Convulsive. The composer's note (translated into English from the original French) includes the following: If philosophy still appeals to logic to define the true and to morality to define the good, it seems that it has long since given up giving artists recipes for beauty. So what beauty is it here? Pretty, suave, harmonious? Or even the arbitrary "pleasantness to the ear" recommended by the old Larousse for the musical organization of sounds, a formula which, ev… more

Mourir un Peu, Itinéraire 1

Description: "Mourir un peu" (“Dying a little bit”) gave birth to two reduced versions, one of which, "Route 1," continued in three movements and was revised in 1987. As a result, the overall structure, which is very elaborate in terms of relative durations, is somewhat modified. But the piece, brought back to this triptych, is nonetheless an autonomous formal unit. "Where we speak, of course, of departure, of the journey, of the farewell ‘To leave is to die a little,’ but also of escape, of pleasure, of in… more

Energies

Description: "This piece made in 1969 with extremely modest means was integrated in 1972 into a triptych, Assemblages, which accompanied an exhibition of "Volumes éclatés" by the sculptor Michel Anasse. It can be considered the third of my "presentable" studies. “Energies” was part of the material submitted in 1988 for the first "Magisterium" of the Bourges Competition, which was obtained. "

Chiaroscuro

Description: Of course, this Chiaroscuro is one of shadows and light, of opacity and transparency of sound, of the incertitude between one and the other. However, beyond this, it is the ambiguity, the hesitation between spoken and suggested, between face and mask (warning : a sound may hide another), between manifest and latent, enactment and illusion. "Trompe-l'oreille" music. As in much of my work, certain sound elements come from earlier pieces and are developed anew here. I like the fact that the disc… more

...Mourir un peu

Description: Where we speak, of course, departure, travel, farewell ("Leaving is a little dying ..."); but also of escape, of pleasure, of initiatory journeys, of imagined space and, again, of loss, oblivion, absence, "little death" and "great journey". It is not irrelevant that this piece was created in Marseilles, among the remains of the ancient Phocaean port; the first movement is a quick allusion to this journey back in time. The sea so close, inexhaustible and plural symbol, was to be present. She is… more

This work was premiered on August 11, 1977 at the Festival de Saint Remy de Provence by the double bass player Henri Texier; it is, in fact, at the origin of a mixed music. Inspired by Henri Texier's album, Amir, it borrows materials, groups and objects from this record and sets out to return to a electroacoustic reflection. Mais Laisserons Nous Mourir Arianna?

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's Mais Laisserons Nous Mourir Arianna? performed by soprano, Marthe Forget. Several polemics underlie and articulate the piece: opposition, between two types of time: plethoric time (very rich in information, exploding in groups and cells of discrete micro-elements) and fixed time (frames--slow and continuous evolutions), contrasts between the mobility in flight ((in the range, dynamics, etc.) of areas fixed in relation to each other - lightning paths, fractures of … more

Forêt profonde comprises 13 sections, of which the 6 Rooms (sections 1, 3, 6, 8, 10 and 12) constitute transit periods/areas, secret passages of sort, between the seven thematic sections (sections 2, 4,5, 7, 9, 11 and 13). Métonymie ou le corps impossible

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's Métonymie ou le corps impossible. The composer writes this about the work: "Two possible readings: 1) "Metonymy", figure of rhetoric; "An object is designated by the no of a similar object". Uses 4 families of sound sources: musical instruments, voices, concert and electronic sounds. Most sound objects are "diverted" from their context; in this lies metonymy. Each family offers collections of objects cutting the duration in pulse / smooth time by contrasts, opposi… more

Phonurgie

Description: Recording of Francis Dhomont's Phonurgie. For electronics and manipulated pre-recorded sound. This work is a celebration of musique concrète and a movement of a larger project. These four works constantly bounce off each other, call out to one another, reply, complement and extend diversions. Although technological tools have changed and the color of sound has evolved, the constructions have remained to the ideals of the first "concerts de bruits" (noise concerts).
