P-P Elastic and Charge-Exchange Scattering at about 120 Mev

Description: Observation of antiprotons in a propane or hydrogen bubble chamber offers the possiblity of studying several phenomena for which counter or photographic emulsion techniques are less suitable. Because there is a high ratio of pions, muons, and electrons to antiprotons in the available momentum-analyzed beams, these beams cannot be used in the bubble chamber without an initial purification, which increases the ratio of antiprotons to other particles. Such a purification has been achieved by utili… more

THE RADIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT AND RECOVERY OF CONTAMINATED AREAS

Description: The Civil Effects Test Operation Exercise CEX-57.1 following Operation Plumbbob was carried out to obtain information on decontamination procedures that could be used as radiological countermeasures. The test was conducted on D + 1 and D + 2 days after shot Coulomb C. Data were obtained on reclamation of land areas by scraping with a motorgrader, on fire-hosing and scrubbing a concrete- slab roof, and on fire-hosing a composition roof. In addition, some shielding data were obtained for a small … more

Accidental Dispersion of Reactor Poisons and the Controlled Distance Required

Description: Two types of hypothetical reactor catastrophe are considered. In the first of these, the Boiling Accident,'' it is assumed that a fraction of the radioactive material in a reactor is released to the atmosphere at a steady rate over a period of hours. In the second, the Puff Accident,'' it is assumed that the release of the radioactive material takes place instantaneously.'' The following concepts are used as measures of the hazard existing outside the controlled plant area. Danger Distance,'' d… more

Radioactive Waste Disposal at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory

Description: One of Its Monograph Series The Industrial Atom.'' Disposal of radioactive wastes from KAPL is considered with respect to the three physical categories of waste--solid, liquid, and airborne---and the three environmental recipients ---ground, surface water, and atmosphere. Solid waste-handling includes monitoring radiation levels, segregation, collection, processing, packaging, storing if necessary, and shipping to a remote burial ground at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Liquid waste is coll… more

Lectures on Game Theory, Markov Chains, and Related Topics

Description: Notes on nine lectures delivered at Sandin Corporation in August 1957 are given. Part one contains the manuscript of a paper concerning a judging problem. Part two is concerned with finite Markov-chain theory amd discusses regular Markov chains, absorbing Markov chains, the classification of states, application to the Leontief input-output model, and semimartingales. Part three contains notes on game theory and covers matrix games, the effect of psychological attitudes on the outcomes of games,… more

HYDROCLONE PERFORMANCE IN THE SOLVENT RECOVERY SYSTEM OF THE THOREX PLANT

Description: Tests on 1-gpm and 0.5-gpm hydroclones showed them to be unnecessary. Solvent-aqueous phase separation, although effective when optimized, was infrequently required. The 1-gpm hydroclone produced better water separation than the 0.5-gpm hydroclone for similar control parameters. Decontamination factors for widely varying flow conditions ranged from 1 to 3. Introduction of water into the hydroclone feed stream had no effect on decontamination or particle removal. (auth)

STUDIES OF UPPER-PLENUM COOLANT CIRCULATION IN A QUARTER-SCALE AIR-FLOW MODEL OF THE PWR

Description: Air-flow studies were run in a quarter-scale flow model of the PWR to determine distribution of flow throughout the upper-plenum region with two different hold-down-barrel designs. With each hold-down barrel, flow paths were determined for operation with four loops, three loops, two opposed loops, and two adjacent loops. Exploration of flow patterns and velocities throughout the upper plenum showed that circulation of coolant throughout the upper plenum was satisfactory with either of the hold-… more

Dynamic Analysis of Natural Circulation Boiling Water Power Reactors

Description: Linear Feedback Control Theory is used to analyze the small-signal dynamic behavior of direct cycle, natural circulation boiling water reactor systems. Transfer functions for thermodynamic and hydraulic effects are derived in terms of reactor core and vessel dimensions. They are used to construct a theoretical system block diagram for the EBWR. Electrostatic Effects in the Deposition of Aerosols on Cylindrical Shapes. Technical Report No. 15

Description: A basic study of the mechanism of deposition of small particles on cylindrical collectors in the presence of electrostatic forces has been made. Theoretical equations predicting the efficiency of collection have been derived and solved with a digital computer. The solution of these equations is shown. The deposition of liquid aerosol particles on cylindrical collectors was measured experimentally for a range of electrostatic conditions. The experimental results agree with the theory. An experim… more

Vinyl Coating of Graphite Plates for Ultrasonic Inspection

Description: A process has been developed for application of a thin, adherent vinyi plastic coating to graphite plates to prevent absorption of coupling fluids'' used in ultrasonic inspection. The plates are preheated and dipped mechanically in a fluid plastisol, and the resulting coating is fused in an infra-red heater. No significant attenuation of ultrasonic impulse results from presence of the coating. After inspection, the vinyl sheath may be easily stripped from the plate. (auth)
