The Laplacian for a Beryllium Metal Lattice of Volume Ratio 17.2

Description: Abstract. the Laplacian of a beryllium metal lattice with 3.3 kg of uranium metal per cell and a volume ratio of 17.2 was measured in the removable region of the CP-2 machine. the sandwich effect with different moderators made interpretation of the observations very uncertain. The best result found was Be = 407 x 10(-6) cm(-2).

Effect of Compressibility at High Subsonic Velocities on the Lifting Force Acting on an Elliptic Cylinder

Description: An extended form of the Ackeret iteration method, applicable to arbitrary profiles, is utilized to calculate the compressible flow at high subsonic velocities past an elliptic cylinder. The angle of attack to the direction of the undisturbed stream is small and the circulation is fixed by the Kutta condition at the trailing end of the major axis. The expression for the lifting force on the elliptic cylinder is derived and shows a first-step improvement of the Prandtl-Glauert rule. It is further… more

Tests of a 1/7-Scale Semispan Model of the XB-35 Airplane in the Langley 19-Foot Pressure Tunnel

Description: From Summary: "A 1/7 scale semispan model of the XB-35 airplane was tested in the Langley 10 foot pressure tunnel, primarily for the purpose of investigating the effectiveness of a leading-edge slot for alleviation of stick-fixed longitudinal instability at high angles of attack caused by early tip stalling and a device for relief of stick-free instability caused by elevon up-floating tendencies at high angles of attack. Results indicated that the slot was not adequate to provide the desired im… more

Evaluation of Gust and Draft Velocities from Flights of P-61c Airplanes within Thunderstorms 2 - July 9, 1946 to July 11, 1946 at Orlando, Florida

Description: "The results obtained from an evaluation for gust and draft velocities of acceleration and airspeed-altitude records taken by NACA recording instruments installed in P-61c airplanes participating in thunderstorm flights 6, 7, and 8 of July 9, 1946, July 10, 1946, and July 11, 1946, respectively, are presented herein. These data are summarized in tables I and II. In accordance with a recent discussion with a member of the U.S. Weather Bureau staff, the tabulated results for the present flight in… more
