A Study of the Effects of a Systematic Program of Instruction in Helicopter Technology on Student Preferences for Kinds of Learning Experiences

Description: The problem of this study was to compare two methods of instruction in helicopter pilot ground training in terms of cost of training and support services and customer satisfaction upon completion of training. The purpose of the study was the evaluation of a specialized program of instruction taught on videotape by comparison with conventional instruction. The significance of the study was related to savings in costs of instruction per trainee. Research questions for the study sought significant… more

The Use of Imagery for the Control of Experimentally Induced Pain: Prescribed Versus Individualized Imagery

Description: Measures of pain tolerance and threshold were obtained for 100 male and female subjects in a pretest treatment posttest experiment using the cold pressor test. Subjects were divided into five treatment groups with an equal representation of males and females in each group. In addition each group was divided into high and low locus of control, resulting in a 2 X 5, locus of control-by—treatment, experimental design. Treatment groups received one of the following five sets of instructions: prescr… more

Operator Gauge Transformations in Nonrelativistic Quantum Electrodynamics

Description: A system of nonrelativistic charged particles and radiation is canonically quantized in the Coulomb gauge and Maxwell's equations in quantum electrodynamics are derived. By requiring form invariance of the Schrodinger equation under a space and time dependent unitary transformation, operator gauge transformations on the quantized electromagnetic potentials and state vectors are introduced. These gauge transformed potentials have the same form as gauge transformations in non-Abelian gauge field … more

Conflict Management of the Organization of African Unity in Intra- African Conflicts, 1963-1980

Description: The purpose of this dissertation is to examine and evaluate the role of the Organization of African Unity as an international organization in the solution of intra-African conflicts. For the purpose of this paper, eight conflicts from 1963 to 1980 were investigated. Utilizing these cases, the paper (a) examines four assumptions: (1) that regional actions promote settlements by isolating soluble local conflicts from more complex ones; (2) that intrastate conflicts are more difficult to resolve b… more

The Identification of Selected Student Factors, Prior to Admission into the Nursing Sequence, in Successful Completion fo a Baccalaureate Nursing Education

Description: The problem with which this study is concerned is the identification of selected factors, prior to a student's admission into the nursing sequence, that may be related to the student's success in completing a baccalaureate nursing education. The purposes of the study were (1) to determine if there is a relationship between the reading ability of baccalaureate nursing students and their grades in their initial nursing course, (2) to determine if there are statistically significant differences in… more

Photoconductivity Investigation of Two-Photon Magneto-Absorption, PACRH, and Deep Levels in n-InSb

Description: A high resolution photoconductivity investigation of two 13 -3 photon magneto-absorption (TPMA) in n-InSb (n - 9 x 10 cm ) has been performed. This is the first time that two-photon absorption in a semiconductor has been studied with cw lasers only. With a stable cw CC>2 laser and a highly sensitive sampling and magnetic field modulation technique, a minimum of 4 2 transitions in the TPMA photoconductivity spectra can be observed. Most of these transitions are a result of the usual spherical ap… more

The Traité d'harmonie of Charles-Simon Catel

Description: With the founding of the Paris Conservatory in 1795, a diversity of instructional methods for the teaching of harmony were used. Each theory instructor insisted upon using his own system; some relied heavily upon the theories of Rameau, while others used ideas based on eighteenth century German or Italian theorists. The Conservatory administration, realizing the need to unify theoretical instruction into a single method, formed a committee to evaluate the different harmonic systems available. A… more

Gateaux Differentiable Points of Simple Type

Description: Every continuous convex function defined on a separable Banach space is Gateaux differentiable on a dense G^ subset of the space E [Mazur]. Suppose we are given a sequence (xn) that Is dense in E. Can we always find a Gateaux differentiable point x such that x = z^=^anxn.for some sequence (an) with infinitely many non-zero terms so that Ση∞=1||anxn|| < co ? According to this paper, such points are called of "simple type," and shown to be dense in E. Mazur's theorem follows directly from the res… more

A Paradoxical Treatment Technique Versus a Behavioral Approach in Treatment of Procrastination of Studying

Description: The present study investigated the relative efficacy of paradoxical, behavioral, and reflection-support treatments among college students who complained about procrastination of studying. Although there is much literature describing successful use of paradoxical treatment, there has been little substantive research. Paradoxical techniques offer more complex theoretical explanations than behavioral therapy even though in practice the procedure of each are often quite similar. Subjects were selec… more

Chemically Active Odorants as Olfactory Probes

Description: The initial step in odor recognition by the nose is the binding of odorant molecules to receptor sites embedded in the dendritic membranes of olfactory receptor cells. Despite considerable interest and experimentation into the nature of these receptor sites, little is known of their specificity to different types of odorant molecules. This lack of knowledge partially stems from the fact that the nature of receptor proteins is most effectively studied when specific and irreversible inhibitors ar… more
