Obertura y Albanzas

Description: These two sections, each separately, are part of the work composed for a ballet called "Song of Creation", based on the link of St. Francis of Assisi. The first part (opening) depicts St Francis of Assisi, sitting alone, sick in the dark. The second part (Prayers) is based on Psalm 141 "Lord, take my soul out of this prison, so that I pray ... Make every cell of my body reach you ...".

Los ojos de mis sueños

Description: Los ojos de mis sueños is a work composed in the studios of IPEM, which resulted in my encounter with man-machine. I set my anguish and impatience there, based on the line: What the eyes of my brilliant dreams is beyond death. The pain and the impatience of the synthesizer are of equal importance in the composition.

A pocketful of posies

Points

Description: Points was realized on a VAX 11/750 computer at EMS in Stockholm. Most of the source material was generated with a program called Chant. This program is especially designed for synthesis of the human voice, and developed at IRCAM in Paris, by among others like Xavier Roder. The material has then been processed and structured with a set of different "processing-programs".

Possible Orchestras (At the 21 st Harmonic)

Description: Recording of John Celona's Possible Orchestras (At the 21 st Harmonic). The sound material for this composition was produced using several FM synthesis techniques. When listening to the piece, high regions of formants are obtained when compared to the frequencies at which the fundamentals are placed. Periodic vibrato is used to modify pitches across the entire width of the harmonic spectrum.

Presagio

Description: Recording of Roberto Morales-Manzana's Presagio. The piece is a story about a strong tropical storm in the Tehuantepec Oaxaca region; while the storm is occurring, non-optimistic images arise from the spectator. Instrumentation includes two analog synthesizers (a harp 2600 and a korg 2100), voice and flute, which have been processed live through both synthesizers in addition to an analog pitch follower. Mercedes Benet did the voice and reading. Roberto Morales-Manzana did the flute and electron… more

Promenade dans un espace insolite

Description: This piece was made at the Montgets in the summer of 1980 or 81 with simple production means, 3 Revox tape recorders, a pair of scissors and a small 4/2 mixer. It relies on sound recordings made during a weekend spent with the Théâtre du Rafeau du Mans (French Tanguy, Laurence Châble ...). In particular, I used a recording made during the descent and the rope climb at the bottom of a former wheat silo where we had a picnic and played some music. The piece uses this material by metaphorising it … more

A Quiet Disturbance

Description: This piece for magnetic tape is - from several points of view - a confrontation of various worlds. First of all, on the music-technical level: the production process. The means of the classic studio, the manual aspect of the work on one side, the generation of basic sound materials on the other side. In addition, the piece is a confrontation of concrete sounds and electronic sounds. The complex spectrum of the human voice is used in this case as a "plastic algorithm" of great flexibility and con… more

Race

Description: The inspiration for this piece came from running my first marathon in Montreal (Sept. '84). The work is meant to portray what it is like to run a marathon. First, the crowds at the start, and then when you eventually start the thousands of people around you (there were 11,000 runners in the race I ran in!). Eventually you begin to drift into a trance-like state where you just keep up your pace and become aware of some of the detail and rhythms in your body. Although more distance is travelled i… more

Rond'Eau

Description: Rond'eau's compositional process is dominated by two main areas. The first is the use of circular and rotary movement, both in terms of space and form. At the spatial level, the most important model of this piece is its attempt to grasp the problem of the representation of movement by means of two dimensions: stereophony. Although composed specifically for a multi-track broadcast (a system that broadly broadens the space capabilities in two or three dimensions of the stereo band), attempts have… more

A Sea Inside Myself

Description: The sea is always moving, waving and roaring, fast or slow. Sometimes green or blue, dark or light, warm or cold. In the same way my mind is constantly in commotion. In my head, in my ears, inside myself. I tried to reflect these thoughts in this composition. The basic material is a recording of several percussion sounds, which are modulated electronically by a synthesizer, a Publison Harmonizer and a EMT 251 digital reverb system. The last one is a splendid machine for special effects, which … more
