Zhiva

Description: Recording of Gabriel Prokofiev's Zhiva. Zhiva is essentially an abstract work, allowing each listener to follow their own meanings as the music moves between various meditative and agitated moods. Zhiva reflects the introspective experience of losing oneself in the lively wanderings of consciousness. The use of pitched sounds, which create a melodious, positive, and occasionally meditative sound world, was a prime artistic concern of the piece.

Zoetrope

Description: Recording of Joseph Hyde's Zoetrope. It explores issues around the relationship between people and machines, and questions perceptions of the perfection of technology. Sound is absolutely at the center of Zoetrope. It is the sound that carries the piece, dictates its form. Zoetrope uses concrete sounds and images and the language of Musique Concrete. It also takes on a little of the LoFi/Hi Tech gloss of MTV, whilst remaining one step removed.

Zoo logical

Description: Recording of Andrew Bentley's Zoo-logical for tape. The piece functions as a sort of trilogy (if it is called a dialogue between three people) between a poem, sounds of animals that are electronic in origin. The work is related to the themes of the Helsinki Agreements which mainly are contained in the words "participant nations" and "United Nations." The poem that is spoken is Finnish in origin.

Zoophonia

Description: Recording of Zoltán Pongrácz's Zoophonia for two channel tape. The sound material consists of thirty different animal sounds - including dolphin, fish for the Black Sea, monkey, dog, cat, frog, wild goose, and various birds - and from ten nature sounds - wind, water splashing, rain, thunder - which are electronically processed. The piece was commissioned by the Budapest Film Factory "MAFILM" and was realized in the studio of the Filmfabrik "Exaustud" in 1973.

Description: Recording of Riccardo Dapelo's Zu klugen Gestirnen. For soprano and tape. The work is derived from a picture poetry of Paul Klee. The composer tries to separate elements common to Klee's theory. The starting point is a small sound gesture: an upward exponential function. This function shapes all the steps of the work in a motion from noise to sound. The attempt is to build a self-similar structure with matching between small details and larger forms.

Zungenschlag

Description: Recording of Andre Bartetzki's Zungenschlag. This is a work for 8 loudspeakers that explores the sounds of vibrating reeds. In German the word "Zunge" (tongue) is a basic term used for reeds in musical instruments. While the composer speaks of vibrating reeds, there are no instrumental sounds of woodwinds within the work. Instead, the composer uses string sounds and actual vibration sounds as the material.
