Ablative fast pyrolysis of biomass in the entrained-flow cyclonic reactor at SERI

Description: Progress with the entrained flow cyclonic reactor at SERI is detailed. Feedstocks successfully used include wood flour and fairly large sawdust. Preliminary results show that relatively complete vaporization of the biomass is realized and that the yields of tar or gas can be varied over quite a range with trends following first order kinetic concepts.

Absolutely calibrated soft-x-ray streak camera for laser-fusion applications

Description: The intensity output of a soft-x-ray streak camera was calibrated (SXRSC) in order to make absolute flux measurements of x rays emitted from laser-produced plasmas. The SXRSC developed at LLNL is used to time-resolve x-ray pulses to better than 20 ps. The SXRSC uses a Au photocathode on a thin carbon substrate which is sensitive to x rays from 100 eV to greater than 10 keV. Absorption of ion Bernstein waves by impurity cyclotron harmonics

Description: This paper analyzes the damping of externally-launched ion Bernstein waves by absorption at the cyclotron harmonics of the impurity ions. The inclusion of the non-magnetic energy flux term reduces the damping rate by nearly two orders of magnitude from the previous calculation. Excessive impurity damping can be avoided by launching ion Bernstein waves at a frequency just below the second (or higher) cyclotron harmonic of hydrogen.

Description: An accelerated aging study of AlGaAs/GaAs solar cells has been completed. The purpose of the study was to identify the possible degradation mechanisms of AlGaAs/GaAs solar cells in terrestrial applications. Thermal storage tests and accelerated AlGaAs corrosion studies were performed to provide an experimental basis for a statistical analysis of the estimated lifetime. Acceleration of heavy ions to very high energies

Description: The current interest of physicists in the collisions of heavy ions closes an interesting circle in the technology of accelerator building. The first cyclic accelerator, built by R. Wideroe, was a linear accelerator designed to accelerate potassium ions. Acceleration of hydrogen ions and conic formation along auroral field lines

Description: Electrostatic ion cyclotron turbulence and the formation of ion conics at low altitudes (approx. = 1500 km) along auroral field lines have been investigated analytically and by plasma numerical simulations. Ion cyclotron waves are assumed to be driven unstable by the up-going cold ionospheric electrons associated with the downward auroral current. Acceleration of magnetized plasma rings

Description: One scheme is considered, acceleration of a ring between coaxial electrodes by a B/sub theta/ field as in a coaxial rail-gun. If the electrodes are conical, a ring accelerated towards the apex of the cone undergoes self-similar compression (focussing) during acceleration. Accurate monotonicity-preserving cubic interpolation

Description: A simple and effective algorithm to construct a monotonicity-preserving cubic Hermite interpolant for data with rapid variations is presented. Constraining the derivatives of the interpolant according to geometric considerations makes the interpolant consistent with local monotonicity properties of the data. Numerical examples are given that compare the quality and accuracy of the proposed interpolation method with other standard interpolants.

ACDOS3: a further improved neutron dose-rate code

Description: ACD0S3 is a computer code designed primarily to calculate the activities and dose rates produced by neutron activation in a variety of simple geometries. Neutron fluxes, in up to 50 groups and with energies up to 20 MeV, must be supplied as part of the input data. Acid digestion of combustible radioactive wastes
