Abortion: Legal Control

Description: The U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 112 (1973), and Doe v. Bolton, 410 U.S. 179, which held generally that a State could no longer prohibit abortions in the first 6 months of pregnancy, caused several House and Senate members to move for an abortion prohibition effectuated by congressional action. To this end, proposed bills and constitutional amendments have been introduced in both Houses. Rather than having settled the abortion question conclusively, the Supreme Court de… more

Absolute differential cross sections over the entire angular range for the reaction /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He at 7. 0 and 10. 0 MeV

Description: Differential cross sections for the reaction /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He have been measured at 7.00 and 10.00 MeV using the time-of-flight technique. By measuring both /sup 3/H(d,n)/sup 4/He and /sup 2/H(t,n)/sup 4/He at the same center of mass, energy-complete distributions between 0/sup 0/ and 180/sup 0/ have been obtained. The absolute scales have been established within +- 1.5 percent by using the accurate /sup 2/H(t,/sup 4/He)n cross sections at 20.0 MeV as a standard.

Absolute two plasmon parametric decay of obliquely incident electromagnetic waves in an inhomogeneous plasma

Description: The parametric decay of an electromagnetic wave into two electron plasma waves is considered. The electromagnetic wave is obliquely incident on the density gradient. The resulting analysis shows that the threshold for absolute instability decreases as the angle of incidence of the electromagnetic wave relative to the density gradient approaches 90/sup 0/. The importance of this result to laser fusion is discussed.

ac loss and dc critical current densities of Nb/sub 3/Sn tapes by the solid state diffusion process

Description: The effects of metallurgical processing on 60 Hz ac losses and dc critical currents in Nb/sub 3/Sn tapes fabricated by the solid state diffusion technique were investigated. An addition of Al to the Cu--Sn alloy for the matrix resulted in large reduction in the ac losses of Nb/sub 3/Sn tapes, but the highest linear critical current densities were observed in Nb/sub 3/Sn tapes produced with a Nb-1 wt percent Zr core in a Cu-13 wt percent Sn matrix. Values of the losses and the critical currents … more

Accelerator for pion clinical facilities. [Cost factors]

Description: Pion sources suitable for cancer therapy utilizing a large acceptance collector are within the state of the art in this field. Costs are remarkably uniform between the various accelerator types, and are within reason for large centers which might specialize in this type therapy. Accelerator size is a problem, but may be reduced as various studies extend the state of the art in this area. None of the contenders is a small device, and all will require a large operating staff (8-10 people) just to… more

Accurate machining

Description: Very minor test part experience of the all-rotary machine has been obtained. Results at this point appear to verify that the machines (both in the three axis and in the phonograph configuration) are inherently more accurate than machines with slides. Much more work is needed to define the desirable operating parameters and the size capacity of the all rotary machine. A second generation three axis machine is in the design stage which abandons mounting the vertical axes from the top, and instead… more

Acoustic cavitation as a mechanism of fragmentation of hot molten droplets in in cool liquids. [LMFBR]

Description: A mechanism that explains several of the observations of fragmentation of hot molten drops in coolants is presented. The mechanism relates the fragmentation to the development of acoustic cavitation and subsequent bubble growth within the molten material. The cavitation is assumed due to the severe pressure excursions calculated within the hot material as a result of the pressure pulses accompanying coolant vaporization at the sphere surface. The growth of the cavitation vapor nuclei inside the… more

Acoustic emission from beryllium

Description: The acoustic emission from both powder and ingot source beryllium has been measured as a function of strain and prior heat treatment. Most measurements were made during tensile deformation, but a limited number of compression tests have also been performed. The acoustic emission observed was of the burst type, with little or no contribution from continuous type emission. The emission was characterized by the variation of burst rate and average energy per burst as a function of strain. The tensi… more

Acoustically induced vibration of circular cylindrical rods. [LMFBR]

Description: An analysis is presented for the steady-state response of a circular cylindrical rod subjected to a plane wave; rod displacement natural frequency including fluid inertia effect, and radiation damping, are obtained in closed form. It is shown that the added mass coefficient depends only on the nondimensional wave number ..cap alpha.. and the radiation damping zeta/sub r/ depends on ..cap alpha.. and mass ratio ..beta... The rod displacement is proportional to wave amplitude and rod radius, and … more

Acquired immunologic tolerance in chimeras and histocompatibility factors in cattle and their relationship to those in humans. Final report. [Gamma radiation]

Description: During the course of this project we have studied 35 pairs of chimeric cattle twins. It is now clear that fractionated doses of whole-body /sup 60/Co irradiation can cause marked shifts in the proportions of the two erythrocyte populations that make up the chimeric mixture. However, it has not been possible to eliminate one of the two cell types and thus abrogate the acquired immunologic tolerance. The results of our extensive skin-grafting experiments are remarkable because they show that a ch… more
