Advanced geothermal primary heat exchanger (APEX). Quarterly progress report Q-1, 1 July 1975-30 September 1975

Description: The major effort during this reporting period was directed toward performing the analytical design task and initiating the laboratory setup for the self-cleaning heat exchanger concept. Analytical design includes the selection of a suitable demonstration site, water chemistry and temperature, and thermodynamic power cycle, and parametric design and sensitivity analysis of a heat exchanger suitable for a 10 MW electric proof of concept plant. Advanced geothermal primary heat exchanger (APEX). Quarterly progress report Q-2, 1 October 1975-31 December 1975

Description: The APEX program is designed to investigate the concept that a continuously recirculating flow of fine solid particles in the brine stream will substantially retard the formation of scale in the primary heat exchanger. The primary technical effort during this reporting period has been the buildup of the test facility. Some preliminary testing has been conducted in order to establish process equipment suitability prior to completing the test facility design. Fouling experiments have also been co… more

Advanced thermionic energy conversion. Progress report, September 1, 1974--August 31, 1975

Description: During this reporting period the characteristics of several types of advanced thermionic energy converters were explored, both analytically and experimentally. Two new converter test vehicles were developed and two test stands and a controlled-atmosphere converter processing station were completed for use in the experimental program. Our previous understanding of pulsed converters was confirmed experimentally, and the work of earlier investigators concerning the inert gas ignited triode was sub… more

Advanced Thermionic Technology Program progress report No. 3

Description: Research progress is reported. A BaO collector was subjected to Auger and scanning electron microprobe analyses. Experiments measuring the work function of promising collector materials at high cesium impingement rates were continued. Evaluation of the tungsten oxide converter, barium oxide converter, and guarded converter continued. Results are given and discussed. (WHK)

Advanced Thermionic Technology Program progress report No. 5

Description: Theoretical calculations were made of the electron reflectivity for quantum mechanical models of the surface dipole layer. Research on plasma theory is summarized including the modification of the plasma program to include electron temperature gradient iteration and a series of tests using a pulsed triode converter with an electropolished arc cast tungsten emitter, a deposited tungsten oxide collector and a four wire molybdenum grid. Converter development is summarized including electrode scree… more

Advanced waste forms research and development. Annual report

Description: Research and development activities on advanced (alternatives to glass) nuclear waste forms are reported. The emphasis is on two phases of the work to give essential background information on supercalcine development. The first is a report of the data obtained in the study of cesium aluminosilicate for Cs and Ru fixation. Research on the compatibility of the phases formed in the complex oxide system made up of waste and additive cations is reported. The phase stability in a number of proposed f… more

Advanced waste forms research and development. First quarterly report

Description: Activities during the last two months are described. A significant portion of time was spent reviewing the literature on the Cs/sub 2/O-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/ system, on the use of clays and zeolites for Cs-fixation of aqueous wastes, and on silicate-phosphate apatite structure crystal chemistry. The results from the latest group of compatibility studies (CS-runs) were used to modify the first demonstration supercalcine formulation so that it is more in line with the actual crystalline ph… more

Advances in stainless steel welding for elevated temperature service

Description: An extensive program to characterize the microstructures and determine the mechanical properties of stainless steel welds is described. The amount, size, shape, and general distribution of ferrite in the weld metal was studied. The effects of electrode coatings on creep-rupture properties were determined as were the influences of slight differences in analyzed contents of carbon, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and boron. Using the above information, a superior commercially produced electrode was … more

Aerial Radiometric and Magnetic Survey of the Lubbock and Plainview Geologic Atlas Areas of Texas: Volume 1. Summary Report

Description: From introduction: Geodata International, Incorporated, conducted an airborne gamma ray and total magnetic field survey of a region of Northwest Texas which covered the Lubbock and Plainview Geologic Atlas Maps. The area shown on Figure 1 was surveyed from an aircraft using large-volume radiation detectors with computer-controlled airborne equipment. Each map line was flown in an east-west direction with an average length of 120 miles. A total of 47 map lines were surveyed spaced at 3-mile inte… more
