Well-information systems as applied to geopressured reservoir description

Description: The purpose of this paper is to present a brief discussion of contemporary well-information systems. Equipment and procedures useful for geopressured reservoir description are emphasized. Efficient execution of a proposed drilling operation begins with preplanning. The well information systems to be employed depend upon the cost and complexity of the operation. If abnormal pressures are anticipated, equipment and techniques have been developed for monitoring instantaneous indicators and drillin… more

X-ray diffraction of HNS. Period covered: April--June 1975

Description: X-ray diffraction data obtained from HNS (hexanitrostilbene) recrystallized from various solvents are reported. The same x-ray diffraction patterns were observed for all of the HNS samples except dioxane. All of the solvents appear to yield HNS of the same crystal structure. The only basic difference appears to be in the crystal size. HNS-I and HNS-II are not polymorphs. The morphology of HNS-I and -II is different, but this habit variation is caused by something external.

X-ray impact induced desorption of gases from stainless steel surfaces

Description: During the operation of plasma devices the interaction of energetic photons with surfaces can cause gas release by photodesorption, and thereby contribute to plasma contamination. Measurements of gases released from stainless steel surfaces were made in an ultrahigh vacuum environment using x- rays characteristic for a tungsten target bremsstrahlung spectrum for electron energies varying from 15 to 50 keV. The predominant gas species observed mass spectrometically are CO$sub 2$ (m/e = 44), CO (… more

X-ray line spectra from DT filled SiO/sub 2/ microshells

Description: This paper is a discussion of curved crystal x-ray spectrometry of laser induced plasmas for h..nu.. < 4 keV. The plasmas were produced by a short pulse (<200 ps) of 1.06 ..mu.. (neodymium glass) radiation on glass shells on the order of a hundred ..mu..m in diameter and a micron thick. Total absorbed laser energy is of the order of 10 joules and x-radiation .01-.1 joule/sr. The shells were filled with DT gas under compression.

X-ray microscopy of laser fusion targets in four energy bands from 0.7 to 4.0 keV

Description: A grazing x-ray microscope was shown to be able to photograph the x-ray emission from laser-produced plasmas between 0.8 and 4.0 keV with a spatial resolution of approximately 3 microns. The calibration of the x-ray mirror energy response functions and the x-ray film allow absolute measurements of the spatial and spectral distribution of the x-ray emission from laser fusion targets. X-ray streak and framing camera techniques

Description: This paper reviews recent developments and applications of ultrafast diagnostic techniques for x-ray measurements. These techniques, based on applications of image converter devices, are already capable of significantly important resolution capabilities. Techniques capable of time resolution in the sub-nanosecond regime are being considered. Mechanical cameras are excluded from considerations as are devices using phosphors or fluors as x-ray converters.

X-ray studies of irradiation induced dislocation loops in metals

Description: Theoretical and experimental progress has resulted in the increased use of x-rays for the study of defects and defect clusters in crystals. An outline of the theoretical framework associated with Huang, Stokes-Wilson and integral diffuse scattering from dislocation loops is presented, and an account of recent experiments on radiation induced loops is given. These studies include low temperature, ambient temperature, and elevated temperature irradiations of metals with electrons, neutrons, and a… more

ZPR-9 airborne plutonium monitoring system

Description: An airborne plutonium monitoring system which is installed in the ZPR-9 (Zero Power Reactor No. 9) facility at Argonne National Laboratory is described. The design and operational experience are discussed. This monitoring system utilizes particle size and density discrimination, alpha particle energy discrimination, and a background-subtraction techique operating in cascade to separate airborne-plutonium activity from other, naturally occurring, airborne activity. Relatively high sensitivity an… more

Zuni Mountains, New Mexico as a potential dry hot rock geothermal energy Site

Description: Many of the criteria for the successful exploitation of energy from dry hot rock are met in the Zuni Mountains, New Mexico. This area falls within a broad region of abnormally high heat flow on the Colorado Plateau. Within this region, a variety of evidence indicates that local ''hot spots'' may be present. These ''hot spots'' are prime targets for dry hot rock exploration. A site-evaluation program utilizing geological, geochemical-geochronological, and geophysical techniques is proposed to de… more
