ABCC-NIH Adult Health Study Hiroshima 1958-60. Cardiovascular Project Report Number 6, Heart Size Norm

Description: Data on 13,000 person 15 yr of age or older obtained during detailed clinical examinations, including radiological recorded heart size, were correlated with sex, age, height, and weight of subjects to arrive at a standard heart size for Hiroshima residents This information will be used in investigations cardiovascular disease in the population.

Absolute Decay Rate from K20→π+ + π- + π0 and the barDELTA I over→bar = 1/2 Rule

Description: In this letter the author describes a measurement of the absolute decay rate {Gamma}{sub 2}({+-}0) {approx_equal} {Gamma}(K{sub 2}{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}). The result is based on 16 events of the type {pi}{sup -} p {yields} {Lambda}K{sup 0} followed by {Lambda} {yields} p{pi}{sup -} and K{sub 2}{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}, and 2608 double-vec events {pi}{sup -} p {yields} {Lambda}K{sup 0} with {Lambda} {yields} p{pi}{sup -} and K{sub 1}{sup 0} {… more

ABSORPTION CHANGES IN BACTERIAL CHROMATOPHORES. II. A NEWCHLOROPHYLL-LIKE PIGMENT FROM THE OXIDATION OF CHROMATOPHORES FROMRHODOSPIRILLUM RUBRUM

Description: Evidence is presented which points to (at least) two bound forms of bacteriochlorophyll present in chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum, both of them readily converted to unbound bacteriochlorophyll (abs. max. 770 mu) when the chromatophores are extracted with acetone or ethanol. Controlled oxidation of the chromatophores with Ir(IV) or with Zn(II) and ferricyanide preferentially destroys the more strongly absorbing pigment (abs. max. 880 mu) but brings about only a slight decrease in the ma… more

Accurate Nuclear Fuel Burnup Analyses; Ninth Quarterly Progress Report, (December 1963 - February 1964)

Description: The objective of the Accurate Nuclear Fuel Burnup Analyses program is to develop more accurate methods for burnup analysis for general use than the current method of analysis of Ca-137 or Sr-90. The program will require from three to five years of effort.

Acoustic Noise Tests of Accelerometers and Amplifiers

Description: This report describes a series of acoustic noise sensitivity tests which have been run on accelerometer amplifiers. The test specimens consists of NRX-A1 type components and two additional piezoelectric accelerometers which are being considered for possible application in radiation environments.

Activity of irradiated regular metal in buckets

Description: The potential of shipping a bucket of metal that has not had sufficient decay time is a common problem to all Reactor Processing Operations. The only method at present to assure shipping adequately decayed metal is by procedural control. This study was performed to determine the feasibility of establishing decay time for irradiated metal in buckets by radiation activity measurements.

Adult Health Study : Review of Substudies, June 1962, Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Description: Data are summarized from a series of studies to determine the late effects of radiation in adult populations of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Results ae reported from studies on skin aging, hair greying, cardiovascular findings, neuromuscular response, antibody levels, ocular aging, auditory aging, and miscellaneous aging characteristics in persons exposed to radiation from the atomic bombs as adults; growth and development studies on exposed persons born between 1935 and 1945; the incidence of neopl… more

Advanced reactivity measurement facilities. A description and performance evaluation

Description: The Advanced Reactivity Measurement Facilities, ARMF-I and ARMF-II, are nearly identical critical facilities and are used almost exclusively for measuring reactor physics parameters, such as reactor-spectrum cross sections and resonance integral cross sections. They are, therefore, designed to (a) have large statistical weights for fuels and poisons, (b) be mechanically stable enough to produce reproducible reactivity measurements, and (c) have sensitive instrumentation capable of measuring ver… more
