Air blast studies with animals. Part II.

Description: Goats under Nembutal and mice were exposed in a shock tube modified to give longer-duration overpressures and equipped with ports for photography. Except for ear damage, displacement still seemed to be the major cause of injury in goats in the 4-foot section of the tube. However, it was found that mice were killed, apparently by pure blast, in a particular position in a particular type of side chamber attached to the higher-pressure, smaller-diameter, section of the tube. The relation between m… more

Air Lift Performance at Low Liquid Rates Using Oversized Piping and Lateral Runs

Description: The use of oversized piping in an air lift for transferring solutions at rates less than 5 liters per hour was proven feasible with certain limitations. Reliable operation was also obtained with air lifts containing a lateral run inserted between the point of air injection and the final discharge point. Discharge of the air lifts, especially at low liquid flows, was very erratic under the conditions studied. (auth)

AIRCRAFT NUCLEAR PROPULSION DEPARTMENT NUCLEAR SAFETY GUIDE

Description: The limitations and operating techniques which were in effect at ANPD for the prevention of criticality accidents are summarized. The standards followed by the atomic industry were followed; however, the safe mass of U/sup 235/ moderated with beryllium oxide and hydrogeneous materials was based upon criticality experiments conducted at ANPD. Although the guide was primarily for the use of the ANPD nuclear safety control organization, it may also be of assistance to designers and operating manag… more

Alpha Particle Radiolysis of Anion Exchange Resins

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Irradiation of 'Dowex' 1, 'Permutit' S-1, and 'Permutit' SK anion exchange resins with alpha particles results in losses in ion exchange capacity and in 'apparent per cent crosslinkage'. The order of decreasing radiolytic stability for these properties in 'Permutit" SX > 'Permutit' S-1 > 'Dowex' 1."

Alternating Direction and Semi-Explicit Difference Methods for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

Description: "The energy method is applied to study the stability of two types of difference approximations to parabolic partial differential equations, the alternating direction methods Douglas, Peaceman, and Rachford, and a new semi- explicit method. Each difference scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. These results apply to parabolic equations with variable coefficients, defined in cylindrical domains with an essentially arbitrary bounded base."

Amine Extraction of Plutonium From Nitric Acid Solutions Loading and Stripping Experiments

Description: Information is presented on a suitable amine processing system for plutonium nitrate. Experiments with concentrated plutonium nitrate solutions show that trilaurylamine (TLA) - xylene solvent systems did not form a second organic phase. Experiments are also reported with tri-noctylamine (TnOA)-xylene and TLA-Amsco - octyl alcohol. Two organic phases appear in both these systems at high plutonium nitrate concentrations. Data are tabulated from loading and stripping experiments. (J.R.D.)

Analog program in reactor speed of control studies

Description: One of the characteristics of the safety control system of the Hanford reactors which is of primary concern from the standpoint of reactor safety is the response time. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the safety control system is sufficiently fast-acting to prevent an intolerably large power excursion from developing. An intolerably large power excursion is one that would cause a melting of the uranium while the reactor power is above the previous operating level. The purpose o… more

Analog to digital converter system for temperature monitoring -- B, C, D, DR, F, and H reactors

Description: This document discusses a proposal that certain presently installed reactor process water outlet temperature data logging equipment in subject reactors to be replaced with new functionally simplified equipment of a more adequate design. The primary purpose of the proposed installation is to replace existing equipment which is obsolete and in three reactors is worn out to the point where the equipment is out of service frequently for periods of time up to 8 hours or more. The new equipment will … more

An Analogue Solution of a Reactor Perturbation Initiated by a Metallurgical Phase Transformation of the Fuel

Description: The analysis of a reactor model that is thermally nonlinear is presented. The significant sources of feadback in the closed-loop model ane dilatational changes of the fuel due to axial expansion caused by temperature and metallurgical phase changes. Ths dynamics of this phenomenon has been represented on the Pace electronic analog com puter. The model was subjected to unusually large inputs of sinusoidal power and did not show any drastic tendencies toward being unstable. (auth)

An Analysis of Inconsistencies in Removal Cross Sections of Carbon and Oxygen

Description: Abstract. Some recent analysis of certain Lid Tank fast neutron dose rates measured in oil and water indicates that there are some basic inconsistencies with reported oxygen and carbon removal cross sections and the reported data. These inconsistencies may be explained in several ways: (1) The reported carbon removal cross section is wrong. (2) The reported oil composition is wrong. (3) The reported oxygen removal cross section is wrong since it is based on an assumed rather than a measured o… more

Analysis of Mixtures of Alcohols by Acylation

Description: From abstract: "Recently a general chemical method for the analysis of mixtures of alcohols appeared, using pyridine catalyzed acetylation and second order kinetics to determine the amount of the faster reacting component. The use of 0.25M isobutyric anhydride in pyridine containing 0.0025M perchloric acid as catalyst promotes the rate of the reaction and diminishes the time necessary to perform an analysis. A mathematical treatment of the data and kinetic plot reduces the number of kinetic poi… more

Analysis of P&W NJ-18A Power Plant Pressure Drop Between Compressor Discharge and Turbine Inlet

Description: This study is part of an evaluation of the P&W NJ- 18A powerplant. The work presented here specifically estimates the pressure drop between the compressor discharge and the turbine inlet. Analysis was asked for two operating conditions. One was for sea level sprint at a Mach no. of 0.9, while the other was for a Mach no. of 0.9 at 35000 ft.

An Analysis of Specific Heat Data for Water and Water Vapor in the Critical Region. Technical Report No. 8

Description: A comprehensive review of the available data for the specific heat at constant pressure of water and water vapor is given for pressures from 14.22 to 4300 psia and temperatures from 680 to 800 deg F. ln addition a description is given of the various experimental techniques employed by different investigators to carry out measurements of this property. Deviations of up to 20% are shown to be in existence between the measured values of specific heat of different investigators. The estimated appar… more

AN ANALYSIS OF THE DISTURBANCE OF A URANIUM OXIDE CAPSULE SURFACE TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION RESULTING FROM A THERMOCOUPLE ATTACHED TO THE INSIDE SURFACE

Description: A study was initiated to determine the precision with which surface temperature measurements could be made in irradiation capsules containing ceramic fuel. A thermocouple was considered to be positioned in a longitudinal groove prepared in the uranium oxide and metallurgically bonded to the inside surface of the stainless steel clad. A fuel capsule having a 3/4 inch outside diameter, designed as a segment of the EGCR fuel element, and operating with a heat generation rating of 27,500 Btu/hr/lin… more

Analysis of the Initial Nuclear Superheat Critical Experiments. Supplementary Study Related to Bonus and Nuclear Superheat Programs

Description: A critical experiment program is carried out in a configuration similar to the BONUS reactor. The results give information concerning: the effects of different boilersuperheater geometries; the reactivity changes associated with superheater voiding or flooding; power regulation between the boiler and superheater regions; epithermal transmission probabilities for B-stainless steel and Cd control rods; the power flattening characteristics; and void simulation properties. The calculational methods… more
