Description: Report presenting the results of a wind-tunnel investigation of the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of two semispan horizontal tails with unswept and 35 degree sweptback plan forms. Test results are provided for models with and without standard roughness on their leading edges and with sealed and unsealed radius-nose elevators. Results regarding effectiveness and hinge-moment parameters, static longitudinal stability, effect of standard roughness, and effect of removing the elevator nose … more

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Horizontal Tails 4: Unswept Plan Form of Aspect Ratio 2 and a Two-Dimensional Model

Description: Memorandum presenting the results of a wind-tunnel investigation of the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of a horizontal-tail model of aspect ratio 2 with an unswept plan form and of a two-dimensional model. The two-dimensional model provides data which can be used as the basis for computing the three-dimensional lift and hinge-moment parameters by the lifting-surface-theory procedure. Results regarding the effectiveness and hinge-moment parameters, static longitudinal stability, scale eff… more

Wind-tunnel investigation of the boundary layer on an NACA 0009 airfoil having 0.25- and 0.50- airfoil chord plain sealed flaps

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the boundary-layer characteristics of an NACA 0009 airfoil equipped with 0.25- and 0.50-airfoil chord plain sealed flaps. The test objective was to define as thoroughly as possible the characteristics of two of the configurations used in a comprehensive investigation of control-surface characteristics and to provide additional data for comparison with previous boundary-layer analyses.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Low-Speed Stability and Control Characteristics of a Model With a Sweptback Vee Tail and a Sweptback Wing

Description: Report presenting testing in the 300 mph tunnel of a model with a sweptback vee tail and a sweptback wing to determine its low-speed stability and control characteristics. The results are compared to testing with the same tail panel with zero dihedral on the same wing-fuselage combination. The longitudinal stability characteristics, downwash at the tail, longitudinal control characteristics, lateral stability characteristics, and rudder control characteristics are provided.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Stability of Jettisoned Nose Sections of the D-558 Airplane: Phases 1 and 2

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the stability of models of the jettisonable nose sections of D-558 airplanes in two phases. The effects of center-of-gravity location and stabilizing fins of various sizes were also determined. The noses were found to tumble end over end at an approximately horizontal axis, which may be dangerous to the pilot if the nose is jettisoned while the airplane is traveling at a high rate of speed.

Wind-tunnel investigation of transonic aileron flutter of a semispan wing model with an NACA 23013 section

Description: Report presenting the results of a wind-tunnel investigation of aileron flutter up to 0.822 Mach number. The testing indicated the absence of flutter of significant amplitude when a considerable amount of wing-tip relief existed and the presence of flutter when the relief was minimized. Results regarding the testing without the end plate, with end plate, and comparison with theory are provided.

Wind-Tunnel Tests and Analysis of Two 10-Foot-Diameter Six-Blade Dual-Rotating Tractor Propeller Differing in Pitch Distribution

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the efficiency at low tip speeds of two 10-foot-diameter six-blade dual-rotating propellers differing only in pitch distribution. Propeller forces were determined from wind tunnel testing and by using an analytical method using two-dimensional airfoil section data. Results regarding propeller characteristics, analysis of energy losses, and design considerations are provided.

Wind-Tunnel Tests of a Swept-Blade Propeller and Related Straight Blades Having Thickness Ratios of 5 and 6 Percent

Description: Report discussing the aerodynamic characteristics of three sets of blades over as wide a range of operating conditions as possible. One set of blades was conventional, one had blades that embodied sweep, and one was a nonswept set with thinner blade sections. The sweptback blades were found to be generally inferior to the straight blades, but the Mach numbers tested were not high enough to include speeds that might benefit from sweepback.

Wing-tunnel investigation of effects of forward movements of transition on section characteristics of a low-drag airfoil with a 0.24-chord sealed plain aileron

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of forward movements of transition on the section characteristics of a 12-percent-thick low-drag airfoil section with a 0.24-chord sealed plain aileron. Section lift and aileron section hinge-moment and seal-pressure characteristics were determined at a specific Reynolds number for aerodynamically smooth surfaces and with fixed transition at two different points.

The X-ray Investigation of the Uranium Hydrogen System: The Structure of UH₃

Description: From abstract: "The uranium-hydrogen system has been examined by X-ray diffraction. This study has revealed one cubic hydride (UH3). Since the structure of the hydride is unrelated to the structures of any of the metal and the hydride has a definite composition, it is not an interstitial solid solution but a true compound."

Zirconium Pheylarsonate Tracer Scale Method for the Differentiation of Pu(III) and Pu(IV) in Redox Solutions

Description: The following report studies an estimation of the amount of Pu(III) and Pu(IV) present in the IBP Stream, with the purpose of establishing an analytical, method suitable for routine control analysis. A method is discussed that is based on carrying Pu(IV) upon a zirconium phanylarsonate precipitate.
