Full Scale Drag Tests on Various Parts of Sperry Messenger Airplane

Description: "The drag of a Sperry Messenger airplane with the wings removed, and also the drag of its various component parts, was measured in the 20-foot air stream of the N.A.C.A. propeller research tunnel at air speeds from 50 to 100 m.p.h. It was found that the three-cylinder radial air-cooled engine nearly doubled the drag of the bare fuselage, and the drag of the landing gear was about the same as that of the fuselage and engine combined" (p. 1).

A full-scale investigation of ground effect

Description: "This report describes flight tests which were made with the Vought VE-7 airplane to determine the effects of flying close to the ground. It is found that the drag of an airplane is materially reduced upon approaching the ground and that the reduction may be satisfactorily calculated according to theoretical formulas. Description: "This report describes an investigation made in order to determine the effect of tip speed on the characteristics of a thin-bladed metal propeller. The propeller was mounted on a VE-7 airplane with a 180-HP E-2 engine, and tested in the 20-foot propeller research tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Full-Scale Wind-Tunnel Tests of a Series of Metal Propellers on a VE-7 Airplane

Description: "An adjustable blade metal propeller was tested at five different angle settings, forming a series varying in pitch. The propeller was mounted on a VE-7 airplane in the twenty-foot propeller research tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The efficiencies were found to be from 4 to 7 per cent higher than those of standard wood propellers operating under the same conditions. The Gaseous Explosive Reaction: A Study of the Kinetics of Composite Fuels

Description: "This report deals with the results of a series of studies of the kinetics of gaseous explosive reactions where the fuel under observation, instead of being a simple gas, is a known mixture of simple gases. In the practical application of the gaseous explosive reaction as a source of power in the gas engine, the fuels employed are composite, with characteristics that are apt to be due to the characteristics of their components and hence may be somewhat complex" (p. 503).

Ignition and Combustion Phenomena in Diesel Engines

Description: Evidences were found that neither gasification nor vaporization of the injected fuel occurs before ignition; also that the hydrogen coefficient has no significance. However the knowledge of the ignition point and of the "time lag" is important. After ignition, the combustion proceeds in a series of reactions, the last of which at least are now known.

Influence of Fuselage on Propeller Design

Description: "In the present paper I shall not consider the problem of the best arrangement of airplane and propeller, but only a simple method for designing a propeller for a given arrangement of airplane parts. The inflow to the propeller and hence the efficiency of the propeller is affected most by the fuselage. The effect of the wings and of the other parts lying in the propeller slip stream is much less and is also more difficult to determine" (p. 1-2).
