Determination of Zirconium in Plutonium-Zirconium Alloys

Description: A method for determining zirconium in plutonium-zirconium alloys was required as part of an investigation of alloys containing fissionable material, with possible use in nuclear reactors. Alloys of these two elements were brought into solution with a bisulfate fusion and the zirconium was separated by precipitation with p-bromomandelic acid. Development for Techniques for Rolling Uranium Metal

Description: Uranium can be rolled from cast metal or forged ingot to sheet satisfactory for cupping, deep drawing, and similar fabrication procedures by a combination of hot breakdown in the neighborhood of 600 deg C and warm finishing at 225 to 325 deg C. Sheet may also be obtained by hot rolling alone and by warm rolling alone. Development of Forging Techniques for Uranium

Description: Uranium has been successfully forged using a Lobdell-Nazel forging hammer and a forging temperature range of 500 to 650 degrees centigrade. Using standard forging techniques, the metal readily flowed at the temperature chosen. A noticeable increase in tensile strength, yield strength and percent elongation was obtained in forged metal as compared with cast metal. Effect of Annealing Media on the Mechanical Properties of Uranium

Description: The annealing or heat treatment of uranium in any medium other than a good vacuum or purified helium atmosphere, will lower the room temperature properties of ultimate strength, hardness and elongation. In general, the elongation of vacuum annealed uranium exceeds considerably the elongation of air or salt annealed uranium. Effect of Annealing Practice on the the Hydrogen Content of Uranium

Description: It was found that hydrogen is introduced into uranium during process-annealing in a fused salt bath. The increased hydrogen content reduces the tensile elongation and general formability of the metal. The partial removal could be affected by annealing in argon, helium, or nitrogen, and better by annealing in high vacuum at temperatures above 450°C. The Effect of Gallium on Plutonium Assay

Description: Several of the plutonium assay methods were reexamined as part of a continuing effort to make improvements in these frequently used analyses. This investigation included a study of the controlled-potential coulometric, amperometric, potentiometric, and photometric titration methods and their applications to assays of delta-stabilized and alpha plutonium metal.

Effect of Plutonium on the Fluorometric Determination of Uranium

Description: The fluorometric method for determining microgram quantities of uranium dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid was reinvestigated for the purpose of measuring any interference caused by plutonium in uranium samples. No plutonium fluorescence, and therefore no positive errors due to plutonium, were observed. Limited transmittance of hexavalent plutonium in sulfuric acid at 513, and especially at 360 millimicrons, produces variable negative errors in uranium determinations.

Effect of Temperature and Reactivity Changes in Operation of the Los Alamos Plutonium Reactor

Description: The operation of the Fast Reactor is considered in terms of normal equilibrium conditions and normal shut-down. Effects of Certain Variables Upon the Reactions for Preparation, by the Dry Method, of UF4 from U3O8

Description: The effects of certain process variables on the production of uranium tetrafluoride from U3O8 on the 250 g. (uranium) scale, and smaller scales in a few cases, have been studied. It was found that the initial step (reduction of U3O8 to UO2 by hydrogen) is essentially complete in 15 minutes at 700 degree C. Electrochemical Exchange of Silver and Polonium

Description: It has been found that two silver atoms replace one polonium ion during the electrochemical exchange of polonium ion with silver metal. It is believed that the most probable exchange reaction may be described by the equation Po++ + 2Ag = Po + 2Ag+ . From the concentrations of polonium ion and Ag+ ion when the exchange reactions were terminated, calculations indicate Po = Po^ + 2e", E°< - 0.7.

Emission Probabilities of Prompt Neutrons from Spontaneous and Neutron-Induced Fission

Description: A method is developed for using the relatively easily measured fission parameters, together with the mass equation of fission and the evaporation model of the nucleus, to determine the emission probabilities of the fission neutrons. An Estimate of the Lapre Power and Steam Flow Characteristics

Description: A method of numerical solution is developed for calculating the Lapre coolant pressure drop and power output with variable coolant inlet pressure, flow rate, and reactor solution temperature. Estimated Upper Bounds to the Half-Life of Thermal Decomposition of Ammonia, Hydrogen, Methane, and Propane

Description: An estimate was made of the upper bound for the half-time of dissociation at 100 atm for ammonia, methane, and propane at 2500 deg K and hydrogen at 5000 deg K. In each case a unimolecular reactron in the homogeneous gas phase was chosen as most suitable for this purpose. Slater's theory has been used to estimate the necessary frequency factors. Exploratory Studies of Hydrazine Formation by Radioactive Ionization

Description: The production yields of hydrazine by various ionization methods are compared. The maximum value of M/N (number of molecules reacting per ion pairs) for electric discharge was 0.25 and for beta particles on liquid ammonia, M/N = 0.31. A 1-Mev reactor could produce 1.6 kg of hydrazine per hour if M/N = 0.04 as determined by alpha particles on liquid ammonia. About 300 ev of energy were needed to form a hydrazine molecule. (C.J.G.)

Extraction of Americium Nitrate with Tributyl Phosphate

Description: The extraction of americium nitrate with tributyl phosphate has been investigated for aqueous solutions containing sodium nitrate and nitric acid. Americium nitrate is found in the organic phase as free molecules or ions and as the complex (Am(NO3)3. Aqueous solutions containing nitric acid introduce a competitive factor through the formation of the TBP-KNO3 complex in the solvent layer. In addition. americium nitrate is complexed in the aqueous phase by nitric acid.

Fabrication Procedure For RaLa Source Fuel Rods

Description: A new method to procure RaLa sources was proposed by Group CMR-10, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. This method depended upon irradiation of small-diameter U235 wire in the Materials Testing Reactor, Arco, Idaho. A procedure for cladding and sealing U235 wire in stainless steel tubing, by drawing, plugging the tube ends, and welding, was developed, tested, and proved to be satisfactory.
