Zero-Lift Drag of a Large Fuselage Cavity and a Partially Submerged Store on a 52.5 Degree Sweptback-Wing-Body Configuration as Determined From Free-Flight Tests at Mach Numbers of 0.7 to 1.53

Description: Report presenting a free-flight investigation of a rocket-propelled model at a range of Mach numbers from 0.7 to 1.53 to determine the drag at zero lift of a configuration with a large fuselage cavity and partially submerged store. Testing was performed out of a desire to determine if large stores can be attached to aircraft wings without negatively affecting the aerodynamic properties. Results regarding total drag and pressure drag are provided.

Zero-Release Mixed Waste Process Facility Design and Testing

Description: A zero-release offgas cleaning system for mixed-waste thermal treatment processes has been evaluated through experimental scoping tests and process modeling. The principles can possibly be adapted to a fluidized-bed calcination or stream reforming process, a waste melter, a rotarykiln process, and possibly other waste treatment thermal processes. The basic concept of a zero-release offgas cleaning system is to recycle the bulk of the offgas stream to the thermal treatment process. A slip stream… more

D-Zero Signal Board Feed-Thru, Instrumentation and Hi-Voltage Boxes

Description: The three boxes being reviewed all operate at a pressure of less than 15 psig. Since they are relieved at 13 psig, they fall outside the scopes of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code, Fermilab Engineering Standard SD-37B, and Chapter 5031 of the Fermilab Safety Manual, therefore a Pressure Vessel Engineering Note showing compliance with SD-37B is not required. In calculating the design stresses, only the largest of the three boxes, the signal board feed-thru box, was analyzed. This box had the larges… more

Zeroing in on Supersymmetric Radiation Amplitude Zeros

Description: Radiation amplitude zeros have long been used to test the Standard Model. Here, we consider the supersymmetric radiation amplitude zero in chargino-neutralino associated production, which can be observed at the luminosity upgraded LHC. Such an amplitude zero only occurs if the neutralino has a large wino fraction and hence this observable can be used to determine the neutralino eigenstate content. We find that this observable can be measured by comparing the p{sub T} spectrum of the softest lep… more

Zika Virus: Global Health Considerations

Description: This report gives a brief overview of the Zika Vvrus, which typically causes mild symptoms, including fever, rash, and conjunctivitis. Health experts are uncertain whether Zika causes microcephaly, a potentially-severe birth defect involving brain damage.

Zinc(II) oxide solubility and phase behavior in aqueous sodium phosphate solutions at elevated temperatures

Description: A platinum-lined, flowing autoclave facility is used to investigate the solubility/phase behavior of zinc(II) oxide in aqueous sodium phosphate solutions at temperatures between 290 and 560 K. ZnO solubilities are observed to increase continuously with temperature and phosphate concentration. At higher phosphate concentrations, a solid phase transformation to NaZnPO{sub 4} is observed. NaZnPO{sub 4} solubilities are retrograde with temperature. The measured solubility behavior is examined via a… more

Zircaloy-oxidation and hydrogen-generation rates in degraded-core accident situations

Description: Oxidation of Zircaloy cladding is the primary source of hydrogen generated during a degraded-core accident. In this paper, reported Zircaloy oxidation rates, either measured at 1500 to 1850/sup 0/C or extrapolated from the low-temperature data obtained at <1500/sup 0/C, are critically reviewed with respect to their applicability to a degraded-core accident situation in which the high-temperature fuel cladding is likely to be exposed to and oxidized in mixtures of hydrogen and depleted steam, ra… more

Zirconium analysis

Description: Recent attempts to displace fixed plutonium from the body by zirconium therapy have made an analytical method for the determination of zirconium in urine salts advisable. Standard chemical analytical methods for zirconium in rock were not adaptable to urine salts. The poor results obtained from these standard methods necessitated the development of a modified analytical procedure. The results of this work are reported herein.

Zirconium metal-water oxidation kinetics. I. Thermometry

Description: A description is given of the thermometry techniques used in the Zirconium Metal--Water Oxidation Kinetics Program. Temperature measurements in the range 900 to 1500$sup 0$C are made in three experimental systems: two oxidation apparatuses and the annealing furnace used in a corollary study of the diffusion of oxygen in $beta$-Zircaloy. Carefully calibrated Pt vs Pt--10 percent Rh thermocouples are employed in all three apparatuses, while a Pt--6 percent Rh vs Pt-- 30 percent Rh thermocouple an… more

The Zirflex Decladding of Tube-in-Tube Type Fuel Elements

Description: Pilot unit Zirflex dissolutions were carried out on near prototypical tube-in-tube type elements clad in oxidized Zircaloy. The runs were made with the elements horizontal and at simulated large scale operating conditions. No significant difference was noted between the actual decladding achieved in these experiments and that which was predicted from prior studies on similarly oxidized elements with somewhat different geometries. No gas blanketing nor diffusion effects were observed. Initially,… more

ZPPR progress report: November 1987-January 1988

Description: This report details activities for the time period of November, 1987 through January, 1988. Further results are presented from the axially heterogeneous assembly ZPPR-17, a part of the JUPITER-III program. The loading of the ZPPR-17C assembly, with 13 half-inserted control rods, is described along with operational measurements, calculation models, and measurements and prediction of criticality. From ZPPR-17A, calculated and measured results are given for reaction rates and measured results for … more

ZPR-6 Assembly 7 High {Sup 240}Pu Core Experiments : A Fast Reactor Core With Mixed (Pu,U)-Oxide Fuel and a Centeral High{Sup 240}Pu Zone.

Description: ZPR-6 Assembly 7 (ZPR-6/7) encompasses a series of experiments performed at the ZPR-6 facility at Argonne National Laboratory in 1970 and 1971 as part of the Demonstration Reactor Benchmark Program (Reference 1). Assembly 7 simulated a large sodium-cooled LMFBR with mixed oxide fuel, depleted uranium radial and axial blankets, and a core H/D near unity. ZPR-6/7 was designed to test fast reactor physics data and methods, so configurations in the Assembly 7 program were as simple as possible in t… more

Zr and Mo isotopes in single presolar graphite grains : a record of stellar nucleosynthesis.

Description: Thirty-two individual graphite grains from the Murchison meteorite were analyzed for their Mo and/or Zr isotopic compositions by laser ablation resonant ionization mass spectrometry. {sup 96}Zr/{sup 94}Zr ratios range from 0.074 times to 10 times the solar value. Five grains have depletions in {sup 96}Zr, suggestive of the s-process, and two grains have extraordinary enrichments in {sup 96}Zr, suggestive of the r-process. Most graphite grains have close-to-terrestrial Mo isotopic imposition, bu… more
