Alloy sputtering at high fluence: Preferential sputtering and competing effects

Description: This work addresses composition profiles and partial sputter yields of an alloy under ion bombardment. Effects of preferential sputtering, mixing, and gibbsian segregation are modelled. Theoretical basis is an integro-differential equation into which a feasible expression for a segregation current has been included. Dependence on composition of pertinent input parameters like relocation cross sections and atomic volumes is allowed for but not explored explicitly. In the high fluence limit, a st… more

Color Sextet Quarks and New High-Energy Interactions

Description: We review the implications of adding a flavor doublet of color sextet quarks to QCD. Theoretical attractions include -- ``minimal`` dynamical symmetry breaking of the electroweak interaction, solution of the Strong CP problem via the ``heavy axion`` {eta}{sub 6}, and Critical Pomeron Scaling at asymptotic energies. Related experimental phenomena, which there may be evidence for, include -- production of the {eta}{sub 6} at LEP, large cross-sections for W{sup +}W{sup {minus}} and Z{sup o}Z{sup o… more

Comment on Flavor-Changing Processes and CP Violation in the S Sub 3 Times Z Sub 3 Model''

Description: Deshpande, Gupta and Pal neglected the presence of a complex phase in the mass matrix and in the Yukawa coupling matrices of the down-type quarks I argue that phase should not be neglected, because it can explain the observed CP violation. The mechanism of CP violation considered by those authors may certainly be present, but for simplicity one may want to eliminate it, by restricting the soft-breaking sector of the Higgs potential in such a way that complex Higgs bosons propagators do not occu… more

Corrosion tests of DWPF recycle solution

Description: Coupon immersion tests were performed on ASTM A537, Class 1 carbon steel in simulated Defense Waste Processing Facility recycle solutions at 93 [plus minus] 2[degree]C, in an effort to reproduce the results of earlier tests in which hard, shock-sensitive deposits were found. There was no evidence of pitting corrosion on the coupons exposed to solutions containing 0.5 M hydroxide and 2000 ppm (0.043 M) nitrite. Liquid mercury and small solid deposits were found on the specimens' immersed surface… more

DC CICC retrofit magnet preliminary design, software development and analysis report

Description: The January 1992 quarterly progress report discusses a two-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) of the proposed retrofit MHD coil. The superconducting Cable-in-Conduit Conductor (CICC) winding pack has a smooth, semi-elliptical cross section and is supported by a similarly shaped strap which resists the electromagnetic forces tending to separate the coils on each side of the channel. The coils are designed to produce a peak on-axis field of 4.5 tesla with a nominal current density of 13.05… more

Development of biological coal gasification (MicGAS Process)

Description: This report describes progress on three fronts of the project. First in studies to elucidate optimal growing conditions for the consortia of coal degraders employed indicates that best growth occurs with 0. 2% w/v Shefton T. Secondly in comparing the biodegradative properties of the coal degraders, isolates identified as Mic-1 and Mic-4 were the best performers. And lastly bioreactors studies in batch mode are related.

Development of gamma ray imaging cameras

Description: In January 1990, the Department of Energy initiated this project with the objective to develop the technology for general purpose, portable gamma ray imaging cameras useful to the nuclear industry. The ultimate goal of this R D initiative is to develop the analog to the color television camera where the camera would respond to gamma rays instead of visible photons. The two-dimensional real-time image would be displayed would indicate the geometric location of the radiation relative to the camer… more

Development of high temperature catalytic membrane reactors. Final report

Description: Early efforts in 1992 were focused on relocating the membrane reactor system from Alcoa Separation Technology, Inc.`s Warrendale, PA facility to laboratory space at the University of Pittsburgh Applied Research Center (UPARC) in Harmarville, PA following the divestiture of Alcoa Separations to US Filter, Inc. Reconstruction was completed in March, 1992, at which time the reactor was returned to ethylbenzene dehydrogenation service. Efforts on ethylbenzene dehydrogenation to styrene focused on o… more

DOE standard guidelines for use of probabilistic seismic hazard curves at Department of Energy sites

Description: This Standard is intended to provide guidance in the use of the seismic hazard curves developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Experience to-date has shown that application of these methodologies can yield significantly different results. In response to this issue, a Seismic Working Group (SWG) has been formed at the Department of Energy (DOE) Headquarters to coordinate the application of these methodologies within DOE in a… more

Encapsulation of hazardous wastes into agglomerates

Description: The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using the cementitious properties and agglomeration characteristics of coal conversion byproducts to encapsulate and immobilize hazardous waste materials. The intention was to establish an economical way of co-utilization and co-disposal of wastes. In addition, it may aid in the eradication of air pollution problems associated with the fine-powdery nature of fly ash. Encapsulation into agglomerates is a novel approach of treating… more
