Accuracy of the Quasistatic Method for Two-Dimensional Thermal Reactor Transients with Feedback

Description: An important aspect in the design and safe operation of a nuclear reactor is the behavior of a reactor in a transient, or nonsteady state, condition. This study shows that the quasistatic method is capable of producing highly accurate results, relative to the direct finite-difference method, for two-dimensional thermal reactor transients with feedback.

Accurate Alignment of Plasma Channels Based on Laser Centroid Oscillations

Description: A technique has been developed to accurately align a laser beam through a plasma channel by minimizing the shift in laser centroid and angle at the channel outptut. If only the shift in centroid or angle is measured, then accurate alignment is provided by minimizing laser centroid motion at the channel exit as the channel properties are scanned. The improvement in alignment accuracy provided by this technique is important for minimizing electron beam pointing errors in laser plasma accelerators. more

Accurate atomistic simulations of the Peierls barrier and kink-pair formation energy for {lt}111{gt} screw dislocations in bcc-Mo

Description: Using multi-ion MGPT interatomic potentials derived from first- principles generalized pseudopotential theory, we have performed accurate atomistic simulations on the energetic of dislocation motion in the bcc transition metal Mo. Accurate labeling of the light-actinide O4,5 ionization edges

Description: In this short article the accurate labeling of the O4,5 edges of the light actinides is addressed. The O4 and O5 edges are both contained in what is termed the ''giant resonance'' and the smaller ''pre-peak'' that is observed is a consequence of first-order perturbation by the 5d spin-orbit interaction. Thus, the small prepeak in the actinide 5d {yields} 5f transition should not be labeled the O5 peak, but rather the {Delta}S=1 peak.

Acoustically-driven microfluidic systems

Description: We have demonstrated a non-contact method of concentrating and mixing particles in a plastic microfluidic chamber employing acoustic radiation pressure. A flaw cell package has also been designed that integrates liquid sample interconnects, electrical contacts and a removable sample chamber. Experiments were performed on 1, 3, 6, and 10 {micro}m polystyrene beads. Increased antibody binding to a solid-phase substrate was observed in the presence of acoustic mixing due to improve mass transport.

Activity Build-Up Control by High pH Coolant. A Literature Survey

Description: A survey was made of unclassified literature dealing with the control of activity build-up in pressurized water reactors by high-pH coolants. Survey results indicate that a high-pH coolant is desirable for control of induced radioactivity build-up in pressurized water reactors containing significant amounts of stainless steel and that no significant hazards are introduced by adoption of a high-pH coolant.
