Air gun test evaluation

Description: A mechanical shock testing apparatus is used for testing the response of components subject to large accelerations in hostile environments. The test acceleration is provided by the impact of a bullet against a plate on which the component to be tested is mounted. This report describes a series of experiments that were performed to determine the dependence of the air gun test apparatus performance on incremental changes in the hardware configurations, changes in the pressure used to drive the bu… more

Annual performance report for ``A program of FRC theory research``

Description: The original activities carried out under this Grant were specific to the Fusion scheme known as the Field Reversed Configuration (FRC). With the decisions of the Department of Energy to deemphasize experimental activity in the areas known as ``alternate concepts,`` we have generalized our studies. Since the research we have perfomed on the FRC led us into the area of high beta (8{pi}nT/B{sup 2}) and large orbits, we have chosen to emphasize those areas of plasma physics. Assessing DNAPL contamination, A/M-Area, Savannah River Site: Phase 1 results

Description: The primary objective of the Phase I dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) characterization discussed in this document was to assess the status of DNAPL beneath A/M-Area at the Savannah River Site (SRS). The initial characterization phase consisted of: (1) geological data collection to more precisely define the controlling geologic features, and (2) physical/chemical measurements in existing wells. Additionally, background and historical information from the unit (e.g., operating history and d… more

Background information for the PAR Pond safety and health hazard analysis

Description: The baseline risk assessment [WSRC91] has demonstrated that the hazard at PAR Pond is solely from external exposure to Cs-137, a gamma emitting radionuclide. Between 1954 and 1964, approximately 222 curies of radioactive cesium (Cs-134 and Cs-137) were released to the Lower Three Runs Creek system from R Reactor [Ma9l]. These releases were associated with leaking fuel and target slugs in the reactor disassembly basin. Independent studies show that approximately 45 curies of Cs-137 (half-life of… more

Basic OSF/Motif programming and applications

Description: When users refer to Motif, they are usually talking about mwm, the window manager. However, when programmers mention Motif they are usually discussing the programming toolkit. This toolkit is used to develop new or modify existing applications. In this presentation, the term Motif will refer to the toolkit. Motif comes with a number of features that help users effectively use the applications built with it. The term look and feel may be overused; nonetheless, a consistent and well designed look… more

Description: The proposed Brookhaven National Laboratory ultraviolet free-electron laser (UV-FEL) user facility will provide picosecond and sub-picosecond pulses of coherent ultraviolet radiation for wavelengths from 300 to 75 nm. Pulse width will be variable from about 7 ps to {approx} 200 fs, with repetition rates as high as l0{sup 4}Hz, single pulse energies > 1 NJ and hence peak pulse power > 200 MW and average beam power > 10 W. The facility will be capable of ``pump-probe`` experiments utilizing the F… more

A Cloudy Quark Bag Model of S, P, and D wave interactions for the coupled channel antikaon-nucleon system

Description: The Cloudy Quark Bag Model is extended from S-wave to P- and D-wave. The parameters of the model are determined by K{sup {minus}}p scattering cross section data, K{sup {minus}}p {yields}{Sigma}{pi}{pi}{pi} production data, K{sup {minus}}p threshold branching ratio data, and K{sup {minus}}p {yields}{Lambda}{pi}{pi}{pi} production data. The resonance structure of the {Lambda}(1405), {Sigma}(1385), and {Lambda}(1520) are studied in the model. The shift and width of kaonic hydrogen are calculated u… more

Conceptual design report for the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC

Description: The Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (STAR) will search for signatures of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation and investigate the behavior of strongly interacting matter at high energy density. The emphasis win be the correlation of many observables on an event-by-event basis. In the absence of definitive signatures for the QGP, it is imperative that such correlations be used to identify special events and possible signatures. This requires a flexible detection system that can simultaneously measure m… more

Congress and Trade Policy Toward Japan

Description: Congressional policymaking with respect to trade with Japan is driven by strong domestic interests, appeals to broad political principles, and numerous horror stories. The $43 billion U.S. trade deficit with Japan continues to be a focus of attention, but the deficit is an issue because it reflects aggressive competition between Japanese companies and U.S. industries.

Constraints on the gluon density from bottom quark and prompt photon production

Description: In next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics, gluon-gluon interactions dominate the production of bottom quarks at hadron collider energies, and gluon-quark interactions control inclusive prompt photon production at large transverse momentum in pp collisions at fixed-target energies. Using such data, in conjunction with data from deep inelastic lepton scattering, we determine a new gluon density whose shape differs substantially from that derived from previous fits of data. The new set of pa… more
