Altered expression of ionotropic L-Glutamate receptors in aged sensory neurons of Aplysia californica

Description: Article describes study in which mRNA expression of iGluR was quantified in two sensory neuron clusters of two cohorts of Aplysia californica (Aplysia) at both sexual maturity (~8 months) and advanced age (~12 months) in order to examine if changes in ionotropic L-Glu receptor (iGluR) transcription underlie reduced physiology8

Chandra and Magellan/FIRE follow-up observations of PSO167–13: An X-ray weak QSO at z = 6.515

Description: This article presents the results of follow-up observations of the z = 6.515 radio-quiet QSO PSO167–13, which is interacting with a close companion galaxy with the goal to confirm the existence of the X-ray source and to investigate the rest-frame UV properties of the QSO. The authors observed the PSO167–13 system with Chandra/ACIS-S (177 ks) and obtained new spectroscopic observations (7.2 h) with Magellan/FIRE.

Climate Metrics for C1–C4 Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)

Description: This article looks at hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) which are potent greenhouse gases that are potential substitutes for ozone depleting substances. The Kigali amendment lists 17 HFCs that are currently in commercial use to be regulated under the Montreal Protocol. Future commercial applications may explore the use of other HFCs, most of which currently lack an evaluation of their climate metrics. In this work, atmospheric lifetimes, radiative efficiencies (REs), global warming potentials (GWPs), a… more

Collaborative Research: Using Uncertainty Quantification and Validated Computational Models to Analyze Pumping Performance of Valveless, Tubular Hearts

Description: Data management plan for the research grant, "Collaborative Research: Using Uncertainty Quantification and Validated Computational Models to Analyze Pumping Performance of Valveless, Tubular Hearts." This project will develop a computational model of the essential features of the circulatory system: the electrical activity of the heart, muscle contractions of the tube walls, and the fluid-structure interactions of the heart walls and blood within. This computational framework aims to be faithfu… more

Combined influence of soil moisture and atmospheric humidity on land surface temperature under different climatic background

Description: Article describes how soil moisture (SM) and atmospheric humidity (AH) are crucial climatic variables that significantly affect the climate system. However, the combined influencing mechanisms of SM and AH on the land surface temperature (LST) under global warming are still unclear. The authors systematically analyzed the interrelationships among annual mean values of SM, AH, and LST using ERA5-Land reanalysis data and revealed the role of SM and AH on the spatiotemporal variations of LST throu… more

Combining loss of function of FOLYLPOLYGLUTAMATE SYNTHETASE1 and CAFFEOYL-COA 3-O-METHYLTRANSFERASE1 for lignin reduction and improved saccharification efficiency in Arabidopsis thaliana

Description: This article tests if lignin content can be further reduced by combining genetic mutations in C1 metabolism and the lignin biosynthetic pathway by generating and functionally characterizing fpgs1ccoaomt1 double mutants. The observations demonstrate that additional reduction in lignin content and improved sugar release can be achieved by simultaneous downregulation of a gene in the C1 (FPGS1) and lignin biosynthetic (CCOAOMT) pathways.

Commentary on "Correlation of solubility of hexamethylene-1,6-bisthiosulphate disodium salt dihydrate versus dielectric constants of water + ethanol mixtures"

Description: This article discusses the finding that Apelblat model equation coefficients are found to give calculated mole fractions that exceed unity for the solubility of hexamethylene-1,6-bisthiosulphate disodium salt dihydrate dissolved in binary aqueous-ethanol solvent mixtures.

Delayed Antarctic melt season reduces albedo feedback

Description: Article discusses how Antarctica's response to climate change varies greatly both spatially and temporally. The authors used a 43-year record of Antarctic snow melt seasons from space-borne microwave radiometers with a machine-learning algorithm to show that both the onset and the end of the melt season are being delayed.

Do gene-environment interactions play a role in COVID-19 distribution? The case of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin, air pollution and COVID-19

Description: This article evaluates the role that gene-environment interaction between air-pollution and Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) genes plays in the severity of COVID-19. Results find parallelism between the number of COVID deaths and the AAT*air pollution global risk in Europe.
