Acetaldehyde oxidation at elevated pressure

Description: A detailed chemical kinetic model for oxidation of CH3CHO at intermediate to high temperature and elevated pressure has been developed and evaluated by comparing predictions to novel high-pressure flow reactor experiments as well as shock tube ignition delay measurements and jet-stirred reactor data from literature. The flow reactor experiments were conducted with a slightly lean CH3CHO/O2 mixture highly diluted in N2 at 600–900 K and pressures of 25 and 100 bar. This is the accepted manuscript… more

Evidence of Endozoochory in Upland Geese Chloephaga picta and White-Bellied Seedsnipes Attagis malouinus in Sub-Antarctic Chile

Description: This article evaluates the role of endozoochory in herbivorous and sympatric bird species in sub-Antarctic Chile. The authors hypothesize that fragments of bryophyte gametophytes retrieved from their feces are viable and capable of regenerating new plant tissue. This relationship may have important implications in the way bryophytes disperse and colonize habitats facing climate change.

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls

Description: Article discusses authors' findings that through genetic screening for suppressors of defense gene induction in the low lignin ccr1-3 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, we found that loss of function of the receptor-like kinase FERONIA, although not restoring growth, affected cell wall remodeling and blocked release of elicitor-active pectic polysaccharides as a result of the ccr1-3 mutation. They determine that engineering plant cell walls will require development of ways to bypass endogenous pec… more

Functional Carbon Capsules Supporting Ruthenium Nanoclusters for Efficient Electrocatalytic 99TcO4-/ReO4 Removal from Acidic and Alkaline Nuclear Wastes

Description: Article describes how the selective removal of the β-emitting pertechnetate ion (99TcO4−) from nuclear waste streams is technically challenging. In this article, a practical approach is proposed for the selective removal of 99TcO4− (or its surrogate ReO4−) under extreme conditions of high acidity, alkalinity, ionic strength, and radiation field.

Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry Quantification of ¹³C-Labeling in Sugars

Description: This article describes a new methodology for monitoring sucrose labeling using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). To date, the most commonly used method to monitor sucrose labeling is by nuclear magnetic resonance, which requires substantial amounts of biological sample.

The metabolic cost of turning right side up in the Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca)

Description: Article examining the the metabolic cost of self-righting in the terrestrial Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise using respirometry and kinematic video analysis and comparing this to the metabolic cost of locomotion at a moderate, easily sustainable speed. The results found that self-righting is, relatively, metabolically expensive and costs around two times the mass-specific power required to walk.

Reduced reflectance and altered color: The potential cost of external particulate matter accumulation on urban Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) feathers

Description: Authors of the article state that airborne particulate matter (PM) can accumulate on feather surfaces and alter feather appearance, so they quantified PM accumulation on Rock Pigeon feathers and analyzed the spectral properties of extracted particulates. Their findings suggest that wild birds could incur an urban pollution penalty as PM accumulation has the potential to alter feather properties.

Role of heterophase interfaces on local coercivity mechanisms in the magnetic Al0.3CoFeNi complex concentrated alloy

Description: Article describes how authors use state-of-the-art electron microscopy techniques to show that the magnetization reversal process in an Al0.3CoFeNi magnetic complex concentrated alloy (CCA), which is responsible for its coercivity, changes dramatically from a nucleation-type mechanism in the FCC+L12 state of the CCA. Their work reveals that heterophase FCC/BCC interfaces have a much stronger effect on coercivity than isostructural chemically ordered/disordered interfaces and provides a powerful… more
