About the Language

Zophei (or Zyphe, ISO 639-3 ZYP) is a previously undescribed member of the Maraic branch of Kuki-Chin (or South-Central Tibeto-Burman), spoken in southern Thantlang Township, Chin State, Burma/Myanmar and by thousands of speakers in Indianapolis, Indiana. There are three major dialects of Zophei, referred to here as: Upper Zophei (exemplified by the Nuitah/Leitak variety), Lower Zophei A (exemplified by the Tlawngrang variety, ZYP_TRZ), and Lower Zophei B (exemplified by the Lawngtlang variety, ZYP_LTZ).
