709 Program for Reduction of Exponential Pile Data

Description: A multi-purpose program for processing exponential data has been prepared for the 709 computer. The main purposes of the program is to compute the material buckling from raw data (given counts, time, and counter information) or from previously calculated Athermal's. It is also possible to compute only CeCh (end and harmonic corrections) for a given B11 or series if B11's no counting data being entered. In every case, pile measurements must be submitted as input for corrections.

Acid-Base Equilibria in Tertiary Butyl Alcohol

Description: From abstract: "The dissociation of acids in tertiary butyl alcohol has been studied by potentiometric, spectrophotometric, and conductimetric methods. Values for the over-all dissociation of perchloric and picric acids and several tetrabutylammonium salts were estimated by the Fuoss-Kraus treatment of conductance data. Potentiometric studies were carried out at constant ionic strength in order to minimize activity coefficient variations. An acidity scale was established from potentiometric mea… more

Activation Energy for Fission

Description: Abstract: The experimentally determined exponential dependence of spontaneous fission rate on Z^2/A has been used to derive an expression for the dependence of the fission activation energy on Z^2/A. This expression has been used to calculate the activation energy for slow neutron induced fission and photofission. The correlation with the experimental data on these types of fission seems to be quite good.

Adaptation of the Siemens Diffractometer for Precision Lattice Parameter Determinations of Single Crystals

Description: Modifications to the A.A.E.C.'s Siemens Diffractometer are described which enable precision lattice parameter determinations on single crystals. Analysis of the errors and consideration of results suggest that accuracies of about 1--2 parts in 10/sup 5/ are obtained on small beryllium oxide crystals. Details of alignment and measurement procedure are included.

Additional Experiments on Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite

Description: In the memorandum entitled "Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite", dated February 25, 1953, there is described an experiment conducted by Gurinsky's group to determine the energy per gram of irradiated graphite released in a 200°C anneal. Similar experiments were subsequently conducted by W. Kosiba, differing from the original in two particulars: a) Instead of two graphite samples, one normal, and one irradiated, Kosiba used only an irradiated sample which he heated first to release the stored… more

Adsorption of Radioactive Gases on Activated Carbon

Description: The purpose of this experiment is to study the quantitative adsorption characteristics of a carbon adsorber bed receiving a radioactive inert gas in a helium stream. An objective of the experiment is to measure the equilibrium transmission of the radio-active gas through a carbon adsorber in order to determine if radio-active decay of the adsorbed gas permits additional adsorption.

Alternate Acid Addition Facility for 100-K

Description: Document HW-33176, "A Proposed Scope of the 100-K Sulfuric Acid Addition Facilities", presented the justification and bases for a sulfuric acid addition facility at the 183-K headhouses and included a system for adding the acid to the raw water. Since the issue of this document several factors to consider in such a system have been brought to light by experience gained both at K and at other areas. The alternate system presented here eliminates several of the troublesome points in the previousl… more

Analysis of a Nuclear Incident in a Redox Dissolver

Description: Since the start of E-metal processing in December, 1958, critical mass control in the Redox dissolvers has been provided by a combination of administrative controls, revised dissolver charging procedures, and new dissolving processes and operation control procedures. These were all based on a maximum allowable charge of E-Metal to the dissolvers which was equivalent to 45 percent of the minimum critical mass.

Analysis of Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering Experiments

Description: Presented at session S-1 of the Tenth Annual International Conference on High-Energy Physics, Rochester, New York, August 25- September 1, 1960. The analysis of the latest experiments on p-p scattering at 210 Mev makes it probable that there is a unique set of phase shifts at this energy. Under reasonable assumptions about continuity of the phase shifts and the behavior of the higher partial waves, it is possible to pick a unique solution also at 310 and 95 Mev. This opens a new era in the anal… more

Analysis of the Combustion of Graphite-Uranium Fuels in a Fixed Bed or Moving Bed

Description: The first step in a proposed processing method for recovery of uranium from graphite-uranium fuels consists of oxidation of the fuel by oxygen to volatilize the carbon. Residue ash from the combustion step can be treated in a variety of ways to recover and purify the uranium. The combustion step may be caried out by contacting the solid fuel in a fixed or moving bed with a stream of oxygen-bearing gas in a tubular or annular reactor. Oxidizing gas may be introduced to the reactor at several poi… more

An Application of the Concepts of Particle Packing to the Consolication of Silicon Carbide Powders

Description: From introduction: Silicon carbide is being considered as a basis material for nonmetallic fuel elements because of its high thermal conductivity, low nuclear cross section, high resistance to thermal rupture, and high degree of stability at high temperature in air. A requirement of the fuel elements is that they be thin and have as low porosity as possible. One shape of element under consideration is 0.050 to 0.070 inch thick by a few inches in width and breadth.

Approximate Models for Distributed-Parameter Heat-Transfer Systems

Description: Summary: The use of dimensionless-parameter frequency response diagrams to determine accuracies of lumped-parameter approximations is demonstrated by two examples: calculation of the heat flux at the surface of a semi-infinite solid due to temperature fluctuations of an adjacent fluid; and the response of a counterflow heat exchanger to inlet fluid temperature perturbations. Dimensionless system parameters make it possible to use general-purpose plots to find the error in particular approxima… more

Backmixing in Pulse Columns II, Experimental Values and Effect of Several Variables

Description: Seven runs were made with the system Penn. Ref. Co. "Supersol" (dispersed) water (continuous) to investigate the effects of pulse frequency, amplitude plate spacing, volume flow ratio, and throughput on backmixing, using the technique of continuous injection of a tracer solution into the packed section. Backmixing was found to be surprisingly insensitive to all the above variables over the range studied with the exception of pulse amplitude and continuous phase flow rate, showing greatest depe… more

BEFCYF And DBDT: IBM 704 Codes For Preparing Input For Bevatron Orbit Code (BOC)

Description: Two IBM-704 codes have been written which are auxiliary to the Bevatron orbit code BOC. The first, BEFCYF, interpolates among tabulated values of the median-plane magnetic flux density of the Bevatron to produce an equivalent array of values in a form appropriate to BOC. The second, DBDT, produces azimuthal derivatives of the fields produced by BEFCYF. The internal operation of BEFCYF and DBDT is described, and instructions for their execution are given.
