1706 KE Water Treatment for Out-of-Reactor Test Facilities.

Description: Water treatment systems for preparing and maintaining high purity water in out-of-reactor or in-reactor test oops are becoming increasingly important. In out0of-reactor experiments the presence of ionic impurities in the water has a marked influence on film formation and corrosion rates. It is therefore , imperative that these impurities be maintained at the lower practical concentration.

Annual Progress Report of Methods to Increase Burnout Heat Transfer

Description: "Acoustic energy generated by mechanical or electrical signals and its effect on pool boiling of isopropanol were studied. Daring the course of the investigation, a method was devised to determine the amount of heat-transfer surface wetted by the boiling isopropanol. Plots of heat flux versus temperature difference for each frequency showed that the acoustic energy did not significantly affect the heat flux at burnout, but slightly increased the critical temperature difference. No general effec… more

The Application of Pulsed Neutron Sources to Criticality Measurements

Description: Abstract: Experimentally measured promp-neutron decay constants for sub-critical systems are of considerable value as normalization data for calculations of prompt-neutron time constants. A method of measuring these decay constants with a pulsed neutron source, neutron detector and multi-channel time-delay analyzer has been developed and used on a number of fast-spectrum subcritical systems. An analysis of this method based on the one-energy group, one-delayed-neutron group reactor kinetic equa… more

BEFCYF And DBDT: IBM 704 Codes For Preparing Input For Bevatron Orbit Code (BOC)

Description: Two IBM-704 codes have been written which are auxiliary to the Bevatron orbit code BOC. The first, BEFCYF, interpolates among tabulated values of the median-plane magnetic flux density of the Bevatron to produce an equivalent array of values in a form appropriate to BOC. The second, DBDT, produces azimuthal derivatives of the fields produced by BEFCYF. The internal operation of BEFCYF and DBDT is described, and instructions for their execution are given.

Calculation of Shielding for Mark II Accelerator

Description: The proper roof thickness to correspond with a given side wall thickness has been estimated fro experience with the 184 feet cyclotron, which has indicated that a roof of about 1 1/2 feet should accompany a wall of 5 feet, and a roof of 4 feet should accompany a wall of 15 feet. For the roof area involved, this should bring about the condition that down-scattered neutrons in the working areas are but a small fraction of the neutrons coming through the side walls.

A Colorimetric Method

Description: From abstract: "This paper gives a method for determining Uranium using sodium cresotate as a colorimetric reagent. A precision is obtained of better than 2%. In carrying out analyses for Uranium in corrosion products by existing methods such as ignition to the oxide, silver reductor, or titration with ceric sulfate, it became apparent that a rapid, fairly accurate method for determining uranyl ion would be of great value. Such a method is described in this paper. The most logical color to use … more

A Comparative Study of Hanford and Utah Range Sheep

Description: Observations on sheep representing flocks in Utah adjacent to the Nevada Proving Ground were compared with findings made on experimental sheep exposed to various amounts of radioiodine. The Utah sheep showed no evidence of the radiation damage observed in experimentally treated sheep. Estimations of amounts of radioiodine on vegetation required to cause serious thyroid damage following a contamination event are included.

Composition and Thermal Decomposition of Uranyl Peroxide

Description: Technical report on the studies that have been made on the composition and thermal decomposition of uranyl peroxide. The conditions of precipitation and drying have been found to have no appreciable effect on the composition of the compound, but do affect the physical appearance of the precipitate and the rate of thermal decomposition. The UO4 + 2H2O appears to be thermodynamically unstable with respect to UO3 at 25 degrees C and atmospheric pressure, although the rate of conversion is extreme… more

Containment in Cusped Plasma Systems

Description: "A survey of the current theoretical picture of plasma containment in cusped magnetic configurations is presented together with a mention of the points of contact which exist or might soon be made to exist with experiment. A theory of containment was developed which is applicable to the whole range of plasma densities from a tenuous plasma in an essentially vacuum magnetic field to a fully developed plasma which completely excludes the magnetic field from its interior. Also presented are cursor… more

Corrosion of INOR-8 and Inconel Dissolver Components of the Fluoride-Volatility Process

Description: The corrosion of INOR-8 and Inconel dissolver components used in the fluoride volatility process for the dissolution of zirconium with anhydrous HF in molten salts was investigated. Ten dissolution runs were made using simulated subassemblies formed from Zircoloy-2. The dissolver and components were made from INOR-8. Both the dissolver vessel and draft tube were examined several times during the series of runs. The solids which formed at different areas in the system were also analyzed. The res… more
