Adaptation of a Commercial Counter X-Ray Diffractometer for Investigations to 3000°C

Description: The rapid advances in many technologically important areas have not only served to accentuate the increased demands for high temperature metals and ceramics but have necessitated a more through knowledge of their physical properties when exposed to high temperature service. Toward this latter end, the use of X-ray diffraction has proved an invaluable tool in providing data of regions of thermal stability, expansion coefficients, solid solubility limits, and phase transformations by direct exami… more

Analysis for Oxide in Thorium Metal

Description: Abstract. to estimate the oxygen picked up by thorium in casting a rapid method of running the acid insoluble content was developed. the quickest procedure consists of reacting with mixed acids, fuming with perchloric and filtration to separate the "free" thorium from the "combined". The precipitate is ignited and weighed as thorium dioxide.

Antiproton-Nucleon Cross Sections From 0.5 To 1.0 Bev

Description: Antiproton-production and nucleon-interaction cross sections were investigated for antiprotons in the energy range 0.5 to 1.0 Bev. The antiprotons were distinguished from other particles produced at the Bevatron by a system of scintillation- and velocity-selecting Cerenkov counters. The excitation function and momentum distribution were recorded for antiproton production in carbon and compared with statistical model expectations.

Atom Arrangements in Some Iron-Aluminum Solutions, Report No. 1

Description: "Short-range order coefficients were measured at 300 and 400°C for iron-aluminum alloys containing 14.8, 18.2, and 20.0 atomic per cent aluminum. These alloys exhibited a strong preference for unlike near neighbors. The short-range order was greater at the lower temperature and increased as the Fe 3Al composition was approached."

Cell Population Kinetics of an Osteogenetic Tissue, I

Description: Cell proliferation on the actively growing periosteal surface of the femur of rabbits aged two weeks, has been investigated using autoradiographic techniques. Injections of tritiated glycine and tritiated thymidine were given simultaneously and the animals sacrificed at intervals from one hour to 5 days after injection. The glycine labelled the position of the bone surface at the time of injection and the thymidine labelled the cells which were synthesizing DNA . The rate of increase in the cel… more

Cell Population Kinetics of an Osteogenetic Tissue, II

Description: A study of the cell kinetics on the actively growing periosteal surface of the femur of rabbits ages two weeks has been continues. A single injection of tritiated thymidine was given and the rabbits killed from one hour to four days after injection. The grain count spectra of the different cell types, pre-osteoblast, osteoblast and osteocyte, have been compared at different times after injection. The results showed evidence for the uptake of thymidine in nuclei which is not associated with cell… more

Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report : January, February, And March 1953

Description: Dissolution of the large number of samples obtained from the natural uranium blanket of the Experimental Breeder Reactor after approximately 485,000 kw.-hr. of operation has been completed, and analysis of these samples for uranium consumed and plutonium formed is well along. An attempt is being made to distinguish quantitatively between uranium-238 and uranium-235 fission in the blanket area by determining the ratio of ruthenium-106 to cesium-137 in the fission products.

Completion Report An Automatic Fuel Element Stamping Machine

Description: This document will be concerned with the design, operation and maintenance of an automatic fuel element stamping machine. In order to take advantage of automatic unloading and length checking at the Acme-Gridley lathes in the 313 Building, automatic stamping of fuel elements is desirable. This, along with the need for a permanent canning line identification, resulted in a request for a machine to automatically stamp HAPO fuel elements on a production basis.

Design and Test of a Diaphragm Pump for Liquid Metals

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Details are provided on the construction and operation of a two-stage diaphragm pump successfully used for the first time in liquid metal service. From the results of 5,376 hr. test of the pump it was concluded that it is well suited to the pumping of liquid metals at low flow rates where pulsating flow can be tolerated and also where remote operation is required. Operating temperatures and pressures are limited only by the availability of suitable materials o… more

The Determination of Indium in Indium Plutonium Solutions

Description: Abstract: "A gravimetric procedure is described for the analysis of indium-plutonium solutions. This procedure consists of a preliminary separation of the plutonium as the peroxide, followed by the quantitative precipitation of indium diethyl dithio carbamate from a slightly acid solution. The precipitate is dried at 105 C and weighed. Recoveries of 99.4 - 100.5% with an average precision of 2.3/100 were obtained on known Pu-In solutions containing 5 - 50 mg of indium per sample."
