Accident in Continuous-Dissolver Pilot Plant of Fluoride Volatility Project on May 15, 1957

Description: The so-called Fluoride Volatility Processes refer to several proposed non-aqueous methods of processing irradiated fuel elements. In each of these methods, the uranium is fluorinated to UF6 and then decontaminated by distillation. One of those methods, involving the direct fluorination of the uranium by bromine trifluoride (BTF), has been under investigation at BNL since 1950. In 1952, it was demonstrated at BNL that uranium, as UF6, could be satisfactorily decontaminated by distillation in sma… more

An Automatic Polarograph for the Determination of Uranium in Process Waste Streams

Description: The automatic polarograph is ideally suited for the analysis of waste streams for uranium in the Metal Recovery Process, and with modification, it is applicable to other processes, pilot plants, and even to laboratory set ups. The instrument is simple, dependable, and relatively trouble free in operation. It provides an immediate record of the uranium in the waste and, through better control of the process, lower processing costs.

Boundary-layer formation in the pinch

Description: From abstract: "A study is made of various processes that occur prior to the pinch effect when an electric field is applied to a deuterium gas. The variables of the problem are percentage of ionization, the electron and ion temperatures, the resistivity of the gas, and the current density."

Cation Exchange in Acetone-Water-Hydrochloric Acid

Description: Abstract: Distribution coefficients have been measured for the partition of metal ions between cation exchange resin and acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions. the differences in distribution coefficients of metal ions are greater in acetone-water media than in aqueous media of the same hydrochloric acid concentration. Using distribution coefficient data, conditions for column separations of mixtures can be selected. Column separations of metal ion mixtures can be effected by eluting wit… more

Centrifugal casting of plate-type fuel elements

Description: From introduction: "Centrifugal casting appeared to be the only method by which the intricate shape could be produced in a cold mold. With this in mind, a program was initiated for the purpose of determining the feasibility of centrifugally casting plates of uranium-5 w.o chromium and uranium-2 w/o zirconium."

Concentration and Final Purification of Neptunium by Anion Exchange

Description: It is anticipated that neptunium will be recovered in the Purex process by solvent extraction or ion exchange methods as a nitric acid solution of greater than 0.1 g. Np/1 and containing varying amounts of fission products, plutonium, uranium, and thorium, including Th234 (UX1). At the present time this solution is thermally concentrated in the Purex L-cell package to several grams of neptunium per liter. In this operation the solution is contaminated rather badly with plutonium and stainless s… more

Continuous Ion Exchange Development - A Qualitative Review

Description: Considerable interest has developed in the use of ion-exchange in the nuclear energy field in the last decade. Aside from the obvious use of providing demineralized coolant water for reactors, the projected uses of ion-exchange include the recovery of fission products from aquaeous waste streams and the separation and purification of fissionable materials from spent reactor fuels. The latter process may be incidental to the over-all operation, as is the case with the Purex anion exchange facili… more

The Crystal Structure of Bismuth Subchloride

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The stoichiometric formula of the lower chloride in the BiCl3-Bi system has been established as Bi12Cl14 (BiCl1.167) through a dingle crystal, X-ray determination of its structure. ... Previous studies of the Bi-Cl3-Bi system are re-examined in the light of the structural results."

Data Processing For Bubble Chambers

Description: The computer program which performs spatial reconstruction of events photographed in a bubble chamber is required to eliminate human and digitizer errors. It recognizes and corrects for single nuclear scatterings in the presence of multiple Coulomb scatterings. Momentum components are determined and kinematic constraints are applied. Measured parameters are performed into special reference frames and quantities of physical interest are calculated. Results are stored in a tape file containing al… more

The DD and TD Cross Sections

Description: The total cross sections of the reactions DDp, DDn, TD at 10 kev to 10 Mev are estimated from a review of the experimental data up to January 1951. Maxwell averages for DDp and TD computed from these estimates are given, together with some fitted analytic expressions provided for machine use. A collection of the identifiable earlier estimates is also included for reference and for comparison with the new figures. For relative order of magnitude purposes, cross sections and the derived Maxwell a… more

The Decontamination of Uranium from Fission Products by the Use of the Uranyl Oxalate Precipitation Reaction

Description: Abstract: "Decontamination factors of the order of 10-4 were obtained for Beta and Gamma emitters present as fission products when uranium was precipitated from 50 mC activity level solutions as uranyl oxalate under normal uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~60%). Factors of the order of 10-3 were obtained by the use of this reaction with similar solutions under relatively high uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~90%). The uranium peroxide precipitation reaction proved to be of … more

Delay Time Prior to Dumping the HRT

Description: Some refined calculations have been made, relative to a proposed delay prior to a dump, to determine the expected D2 concentration in the vent stream from the pressurizer gas bleeds during a dump of the Homogeneous Reactor Test (HRT). These calculations indicate that for vent valves have a Cv of 0.07 (venting time from 2000 psia to D2O saturation pressure of approximately 12 minutes), a delay period is not required since the D2 concentration is well below lower explosive limit. For vent valves … more
