About the Language

The Poumai Naga language, also called Poula (ISO 639-3 pmx), is grouped under the Angami-Pochuri subfamily of the Trans-Himalayan language family. There are over eighty Poumai Naga villages that speak Poula in Senapati district Manipur which are roughly grouped into three administrative units: Paomata, Lepaona, and Chilivai. The population of Poula speakers is 127,381 in Manipur, according to the 2011 Indian census. In addition, over 8000 speakers of Poula live in the Phek district of Nagaland.

About the collection

This collection includes recordings of Poumai Naga oral tradition of different genres, giving importance to endangered practices and folklore. A Poula Dialects Dictionary by Poumai Literature Society in collaboration with Dr. Sahiinii L. Veikho is in progress for publication in CoRSAL. In addition, a bilingual (Poula-English) story book of Poumai Naga traditional narratives by John Basho is in preparation for publication.
