About the Language

Dimasa, also known by the autonym Graodima /ɡɾawdima/ (ISO 639-3 dis), is a language of the Bodo-Garo subfamily of the Tibeto-Burman (Trans-Himalayan) language family. Dimasa is spoken by about 110,000 Dimasa people. The largest number of Dimasas live in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, as well as in the lower portion of the Karbi Anglong district (East), the Lower Crescent Region of the Nagaon district, and the Cachar district of Assam. Outside of Assam, there are populations in Dimapur (Nagaland) and Jiribam (Manipur).

About the Collection

The Dimasa Language Resource draws from a corpus of written and oral texts. The initial compilation was collected by Dhrubajit Langthasa, and analyzed by Langthasa and Jonathan Evans. The Evans-Langthasa corpus includes texts across a variety of genres. The research was sponsored by grants from Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology and the US National Science Foundation. Presently, it is designed to serve as a resource for Dimasa community members. Additions from other community members and researchers and welcome and encouraged.

Language materials in the Evans-Langthasa collection have been collected and analyzed with funding assistance from a Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology Grant (108-2410-H-001-048-MY3) and a National Science Foundation Grant (2023#1953296). The depositors also gratefully acknowledge the assistance and encouragement of Dr. Shobhana Chelliah.
