About This Collection

The Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations collection consists of more than 400 publications that study the interactions between different levels of government. It features volumes 1-20 of Intergovernmental Perspective along with issues of Significant Features of Fiscal Federalism covering the years 1976-77 to 1995. The collection also contains Commission surveys; annual, policy, information, and staff reports; and miscellaneous documents.

About the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (ACIR)

The Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (ACIR) was an independent, bipartisan intergovernmental agency established by Public Law 86-380 in 1959 with a mission to "strengthen the American federal system and improve the ability of federal, state, and local governments to work together cooperatively, efficiently, and effectively."

Consisting of 26 members representing the executive and legislative branches of federal, state, and local governments and the general public, the Commission studied and reported on fiscal and structural problems in intergovernmental relations, drafted proposed legislation and administrative orders, and provided technical assistance to government entities. The Commission also convened conferences and maintained close communication with public interest groups representing state and local policymaking officials.

The Commission was terminated pursuant to Public Law 104-52 (109 Stat 480) and ceased operations in September of 1996. Its final web page is archived in the UNT Libraries' CyberCemetery.
