Abstract: Cet article montre l’importance des Soirées de Saint-Petersbourg de Joseph de Maistre pour l’interprétation du « Bonheur dans le crime ». Joseph de Maistre était le maître à penser de Barbey d’Aurevilly qui a utilisé ses idées, en particulier celles exposées dans les Soirées, dans sa production romanesque. Une idée fondamentale des Soirées est que Dieu punit, dès ici-bas, les coupables : les criminels ne sauraient donc être heureux. De ce fait « Le Bonheur dans le crime » d’Hauteclaire et Serlon est un scandale qui amène le catholique Barbey à s’interroger – comme Job dans la Bible – sur les voies de Dieu.
