ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Most importantly, I wish to thank my wife, Gail, for support, patience, and
encouragement throughout the long process writing this dissertation. I am grateful to my
dissertation committee, especially Robert Citino for agreeing to oversee this project and
providing useful advice at key points along the way, as well as his incisive and clear
editing. Geoffrey Wawro and Michael Leggiere made research trips possible through the
assistance of the Military History Institute. Dr. Nancy Stockdale provided constant
encouragement to me in this and other projects, as well as Dr. Richard McCaslin and Dr.
Bruce Hunter.
This project never would have come about without the support of Dr. Adrian Lewis.
Amy Mondt at the Texas Tech Vietnam Archives, and the staffs of the Lyndon B. Johnson
Library, Nixon Library, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Archives and the US
Army Heritage and Education Center were all very helpful in finding materials. Dong Ha
and Terry Ferguson were both patient sounding boards for ideas and I owe a debt to
Peter Kaiser for research help on this and other projects.
Throughout my military PSYOP career, Jeffrey Scott, as my company commander,
battalion commander and later group commander, taught me much of what I know about
PSYOP and provided advice on the dissertation. Blake Whitaker, Frank Johnson and
Andrew Whiskeyman each provided comments and advice which proved useful. To my
teammate through two combat tours, Jason Lankford, and all the PSYOP soldiers more
clever than I that I served with over the years, I owe much credit.iii
