manner. With two of my manadas I put two Mexican fixed
stallions, and a jack with each of the other two. I took care to
get jacks accustomed to wild mares. Many ranchmen make a
serious mistake in buying expensive jacks that are driven off
easily by the kicks and bites of wild mares; as a result, few,
if any, mule colts are raised. Apart from the height, girth,
and general formation of the jack, there are two points very
essential for a sure foal-getter. The jack's head ought to be
large, and his under-jaw heavy. If the jack is running with a
manada, the state of his chest will show his keenness or slug-
gishness. If keen to cover, then his chest will be one mass of
lumps or sores; if sluggish, then he will have no marks from
the kicks of the mares. Jack's attentions to the mares are
shamefully resented. He suffers much.
If Balaam's ass were again on earth, he might moralize
with "Childe Harold," and exclaim:
"Alas! our young affections run to waste-
Or water but the desert."
As the jacks will not herd mares, "fixed" horses have to be
used for that purpose, to keep the manadas together. At first
there will be severe fighting between the jack and the herding
