Volume 5, Number 12 _________D_____ December 1997
Saddle up and head south with us to Rick Byrd's three and one half acre ranchette just off Highway 67
in Cedar Hill on Sunday, December 14th, at 1 p.m. Rick has resided at 302 Windy Lane for the past
seven years. This rolling property is filled with cedars and hardwoods and slopes to a creek in the back.
It is a gardener's dream filled with unlimited possibilities. Please bring a side dish for our annual
Christmas celebration. Ok, so there won't be a mountain of fruit cake and nothing else, let's assign
A - G a dessert, H - P salad / bread, and Q - Z a vegetable. Couples who fall into separate food categories
should go by the first name listed on your newsletter envelope. The club is furnishing turkey (cooked by
Chef Byrd), ham, dressing and gravy. Soft drinks and tea will be furnished, or BYOB if you desire anything
else. Dinner will be served promptly at 2 p.m. Any questions about your assignment can be fielded at
972-291-6762. Directions to Rick's home are on page 5.New Look for the
Resource Center
by Fritzie
Saturday dawned crisp and clear, as
those hardy souls showed up to help in
Rene` and Mark's project (especially
after the reported snow that happened
early Sat. a.m.).
I would like to personally thank Rich,
Kel, Earl, Melodic, Jesse, and of course
Rene' and Mark for all their hard work!
The effect was worth those sore muscles!
Didn't I hear something about a hot tub?
Should have taken you up on it!
Several folks persuaded me to wait on
planting the pansies that we purchased
due to freezing temperatures forecasted
for that weekend. After shoveling some
gravel, it didn't take much persuasion!
Next time that you are in the neighbor-
hood (Reagan & Brown) go have a look
in the back, near the kitchen herb garden
(that we started last summer) next to the
fece. We really did do an awesome job
folks!!
You know, we've really only taken the
Resource Center under our wing for
about a year now...but look at the
difference we've made. We've helped cut
costs for the professional landscapingservices; the flower beds up front by
the Community Center entrance are
filling in nicely with donated perennials
from club members; the herb garden is
going crazy; and we're trying different
plants up front where it's really hot in
the summer (with very little water).
Also, Rene' is trying artemisia this go
around, and it's looking pretty good so
far...the lantana will probably come
back and be bushier next year (this is
where the pansies will go, as filler).
I want to thank everyone who has
helped out this year with this project!!
So...

January- Kel & Rich & Rich's sister
Rene hosted the meeting in Pleasant
Grove. It is not way out in the
boondocks. It snowed throughout the
meeting, but really snowed after every-
one left. There were great
pickle/ham/cream cheese snacks. Rich's
presentation on transplanting was infor-
mative. Conveniently, the snow covered
all of the dead plants outside!
February- Nick's place was quite new.
Lovely landscape plans! Excellent
cookies and fajitas. All those wonderful
brochures from Westin Gardens in Fort
Worth. There was talk about the mean
church across the field.
March- Stan had a lovely display of
purple crocus. The video on landscape
lighting was very helpful. Joseph
brought a meat/cheese tray. All those
oak seedlings in the back. The front is
positively becoming a show place. It
was a mild day.
April- Lew (as is expected) showed us
the beauty of irises. It wasn't a
swimming party, darnit, and such a
fabulous pool, too. Deb Survil gave a-
terrific presentation on going native for
your birds and butterflies. It was all the
talk for quite some time!
