Rainbow Garden Club of North Texas
HELPFUL HINTS' INFORMATION. GARDEN TOURS & F4BU/OUS' FOOD
MEETINGS & GREETINGS
From Stan Aten -
Our December meeting was held at my home
and I want to thank you all for dropping by. The
weather was perfect and there were a few bits of color
to tempt the eye from the bright red berries on the
pyrocantha to the lavender blooms of the lantana. The
food collected for the food pantry nearly filled the bed
of my truck and the Aids Resource Center appreciates
your generosity.
From the President -
It has been an honor to serve as your librarian
for the two years for the Rainbpw Garden Club. This
is an important resource which you have all
contributed to through plant sales and membership
donations. It is my desire that you all use these books
more fully in the new year.
As your new president, I intend to continue
following in the footsteps of my predecessors in
educating gardeners in North Texas on the appropriate
plants to grow, conserving our natural resources and
expanding the membership. They only way I can
accomplish these goals is through your active
involvement in this club. We are not just good food
and beautiful gardens as our involvement with the Gay
& Lesbian Community Center and Legacy House have
proved in 1996. So, I encourage you to take a more
active part in the best little garden club in North
Texas.Jim Garnsey
SECRETARY'S CORNER
By D.K. Walker
A beauteous day bloomed on Stan Aten's 13th
annual sugar fest in early December '96. The sweets
were divine and lots of food was socked away for the
AIDS pantry. Thank you, Stan, for sharing your
home and spirit with the garden club.
Well, I'm taking stock of my current winter
landscape and hoping to bring my dreams to fruition
this spring. I continue to battle my slope and hope to
have it perennially planted in the near future. The soil
looks ever so much better on the slope than on the
sidewalk. If anyone has an unusual or colorful sedum
you would like to share (or other suggested planting
for a sunny spot), I have old-fashioned althea seeds,
Texas star hibiscus seeds, and a few other garden
treasures to offer in trade. I'm a little better gardener
than I was when I first joined the club three years ago.
but have learned that like all good things worth
knowing, it is a never ending but rewarding journey.
Maybe Jim has a book to help me out. Now would be
an excellent opportunity to make use of our club
library. Please call Jim at 214-358-0323 to request
your selection.
Don't forget! 1997 club dues are now due.
Twelve dollars per household is a great bargain and
you certainly do not want to miss any sage advice
from Aunt Pansy or other vital information found in
the club newsletter.
I am looking forward to serving with my
fellow '97 officers (President Jim Garnsey,
Vice-President Melodie Alexander, & Treasurer Kel
Schultz) and hope that together we can advance many
accomplishments for Rainbow Gardeners as we reach
out and help our community to blossom.
'Till later, better gardening!
