Speaking of fur, winter is orr its way. We will
be seeing fewer and fewer 70 degree days. The nights,
however, can still get pretty steamy. I'm sure you
remember what I'm talking about. Yes, electric
blankets. Scientists have finally decided that we are
probably not going to kill ourselves off if we use
electrical devices. Probably. Goody.
There have been reports of spring bloomers
(not under clothes) appearing already! Those narcissus
just can't wait. I have been told that if your bloomers
come out early, it's no big deal. Many bulbs that are
not native will bloom when they think it's time. They
might re-bloom in the spring, but won't hurt the plant
in the long run.
Remember to look for the City of Dallas water
department gardening contest this spring. Key words:
xeriscape, native, publicity! You can spend the
hopefully mild winter sprucing up your paths (the
garden type, and behavioral, if you want), statuary,
water ponds, and beds. Then you can enter to win one
of the city awards. The only drawback is that you
must place a sign in your yard to tell the whole world
that you won! And if you happen to have a Rainbow
Gardeners flag or sign out, oh well.
Better run, there's a storm a brewin' an' I
better get the kids inside. We don't want to end up in
Oz.

1997 Winter and Spring Trips
Stan Aten (garden tour coordinator)
In the last 3 years, our group has visited a
variety of arboretums and nature centers in Texas.
We have discussed visiting additional places in
Oklahoma and Louisiana. To plan these trips and
ensure that each trip is a success, we need your help in
deciding where to visit in 1997.
I will list a variety of places that we could visit
in 1997 and the month when we might plan to visit.
At the end of the article, I will provide a coupon foryou to vote for the trips you wish to attend. Based on
these votes, we will plan our 1997 calendar.
Overnight Trip
#1 Houston & Galveston - this would be a return trip
to the Moody Gardens in Galveston and the Butterfly
Museum in Houston. This could be a trip in January
or February when the weather is miserable in North
Texas and gardening on the weekend is limited to
reading gardening catalogs.
#2 Austin and San Antonio - this would be a trip to
the National Wildflower Center in Austin and the San
Antonio Arboretum. This could be a trip in March or
April when the wildflowers are at their peak.
#3 Shreveport - a visit to the American Rose Society
gardens. This could be combined with a visit to Tyler.
This could be a visit in April or October.
#4 Oklahoma - yes there are some incredible public
gardens to see in Oklahoma City. This could be a visit
in June or September after the tornado season is over.
#5 Brenham - a visit to Central Texas to visit an
antique rose garden collection, stop by the Blue Bell
Creamery for ice cream and photos with those
contented cows and an opportunity to meet the folks
from the Rainbow Garden Club from San Antonio.
This could be April or May.
Day Trips
#6 Dallas Arboretum - "Dallas Blooms" this is an
incredible experience with tulips and other spring
flowering blubs as far as the eye can see. Our
experience is that you should wait until about the
middle of March when the weather is just right (never
a garden club problem since the rain stops for our
tours).
#7 Ft. Worth Botanical Garden - a delightful more
natural series of gardens only 1 hour from Dallas.
