The Dreams of Youth.
The dreams of youth, how fair they glow
With life's sweet hopes that come and go!
What raptures wild, what visions bright,
Enchant by day, enthrall by night!
With longing look each sees afar
Some beacon light, some guiding star,
Whose luring hope e'er hangs in view,
Befringed with Fancy's pleasing hue.
Along the future's rugged way,
A gleam is seen, a kindly ray,
That mellows all to eiderdown,
Like moonlit scene in Moorish town.
Oh joyous days of guileless youth!
Oh trusting age in Ancient Truth!
Alas, too soon you steal away
And break illusion's charming sway.
