Notes

John Sartain (October 24, 1808 – October 25, 1897) was an English-born American printmaker who built his career in Philadelphia pioneered mezzotint engraving in the United States. Sartains intaglio prints can be found primarily through Sartain's Union Magazine and book illustrations.

Mezzotint is a printmaking process of the intaglio family. It was the first printing process that yielded half-tones without using line- or dot-based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple. Mezzotint involves marking the plate with a rocker to create a surface of metal burs that hold the ink and allow prints with soft gradations of tone and rich and velvety blacks.
