Notes

Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012) achieved international fame for her powerful explorations of race, class, and her own African American female identity through printmaking and sculpture. Catlett's work speaks to her training in printmakings power to politically challenge society and its corruption. Catlett graduated from Howard University and then with her MFA from the University of Iowa in the 1940s. She then went on to accept a fellowship in Mexico where she continued her printmaking career. The prints shown in this video of the black women laborers were done in her time in Mexico as part of the series titled "The Negro Woman" (1947-48). The most recognized of the series is found in this video as the second print shown and is entitled "I Have Always Worked Hard in America".
