New Music Faculty
Joining the School of Music faculty in
the fall 1987 were Carter Enyeart,
Associate Professor, Cello; Pamela Paul,
Associate Professor, Piano; Darhyl
Ramsey, Associate Professor, Music
Education; Thomas Sovik, Assistant
Professor, Theory; Michael Steinel,
Assistant Professor, Jazz Improvisation.Carter Enyeart has enjoyed an active
career as cello soloist, chamber musician,
symphony orchestra member, and
university professor. A graduate of the
Eastman School of Music and Carnegie-
Mellon University, he has been a member
of the Pittsburgh Symphony, San
Francisco Symphony under Seiji Ozawa,
the Philadelphia String Quartet at the
University of Washington, Seattle, and
the American Piano Trio. He has also
taught at Northwestern University and
Ball State University.
Darhyl Ramsey has had extensive
experience in instrumental music
education as a band director, marching
band specialist, instrument techniques
instructor and published researcher.
After receiving the Ph.D. from the
University of Iowa, he taught
instrumental music education and
graduate music education research
courses at Penn State University and
The University of Texas at San Antonio.
He is active as a clinician, adjudicator,
panel member and guest conductor.Pamela Paul maintains an active
schedule as a concert pianist, having
performed as recitalist and symphony
soloist throughout Europe and in the
People's Republic of China. She has
appeared with major U.S. symphonies
and in recitals at Carnegie Hall and Alice
Tully Hall and other important American
concert halls. She has also been active as
a chamber musician at the Salzburg and
Aspen Festivals. She received the B.M.,
M.M., and D.M.A. degrees from Juilliard
and was Chairman of the Piano De-
partment at the St. Louis Conservatory
for several years.Thomas Sovik supervises freshman
theory instruction and theory placement
exams along with teaching several
sections of music theory. His Ph.D.
research on Renaissance Music Theory
in Central Europe included funded
research in Czechoslovakia. He has
taught at Ohio State University and
the University of Northern Iowa, and
he also has had practical experience in
community music instruction programs
and commercial arts advertising and
marketine.Michael Steinel, an experienced jazz
performer and composer-arranger,
continues as member/manager of the
Chicago Jazz Quintet as he joins the
other performer-educator members of
the jazz faculty. His performance credits
include appearances with Clark Terry,
Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans and others, and
at numerous jazz festivals. He has taught
improvisation, arranging and performance
at Northern Illinois University and at
Bethel College, Kansas, where he served
as consultant to 28 area high schools and
colleges under a grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts.
