".9~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~11w~SLIS students Judy Gee and Monica Ramirez were
enthusiastic participants at the first Reforma National
Conference held at the Austin Convention Center, August 22-
25, 1996. The conference was dedicated to the memory of
Cesar Chavez, leader of the United Farm Workers.
The primary responsibility of Judy and Monica, who were
sponsored by Dr. Ana D. Cleveland, was to promote SLIS
programs. It has been almost twenty years since library
schools actively recruited Latinos into their programs; less
than one-half of one percent of librarians speak Spanish. The
students answered questions about the School's programs on
campus and in Houston and Lubbock, and encouraged those
interested in library science as a career to visit the campus. J G
They also were among the 700 participants from throughout
the country and Mexico who availed themselves of the 75
programs which were of interest to librarians serving
Spanish-speaking populations in public, school, and
academic libraries.
Dr. Cleveland gave a presentation on "Health Care Issues
and the Hispanic Population" in which she stressed the
important role public libraries play in providing consumer
health care information to diverse groups of Latinos. Her bi-
lingual brochure listing World Wide Web health sites for en
Hispanic populations, best-selling ethnic and cross-cultural
book titles, and other publications on health was distributed Monica Ramirez, Dr. Cleveland, Judy Gee
throughout the conference.
Dean Phil Turner spent three very busy, very productive days in Houston meeting with library and university administrators,
students, and alumni. On Thursday, November 7, he toured the Virtual Environment Training Lab and met with key
administrators at the Houston Public Library and the Houston Area Library System. That evening, the Houston Association
of Law Librarians and Houston Local Planning Group of the Special Libraries Association co-sponsored a Recruitment Fair
at the Houston Public Library. The Fair was attended by current students in the Houston program and prospective students,
who met and talked with professionals from all areas of the library and information science field.
On Friday, November 8, Dean Turner met with library directors and administrators at the University of Houston, where the
SLIS Houston master's degree program is based. In the afternoon he toured Fort Bend Library System, Richmond, Texas, with
a view toward offering Houston program classes through their two-way video facility. Dr. Turner hosted a dinner that evening
for administrators and library directors at UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
On Saturday, November 9, Dean Turner visited Dr. Don Cleveland's class (SLIS 5000) and shared a sack lunch with the
students. During the afternoon he hosted a reception for SLIS graduates, friends, and students at the University Hilton. Interim
Associate Dean Herman Totten accompanied the Dean throughout the visit, and several members of the faculty were on hand
for specific activities.
