Experiments with a lime slurry in a stirred tank for the fixation of carbon-14-contaminated CO/sub 2/ from simulated HTGR fuel reprocessing off-gas

Description: The fixation of CO/sub 2/ with a lime slurry in a stirred tank reactor appears to be feasible. The rate of reaction is fast, and virtually complete removal of CO/sub 2/ can be attained. At a gas residence time of <1 min, the decontamination factor (DF) is >100 in a single stage reactor for CO/sub 2/ concentrations ranging from 5 to 100%. It has been determined that two-stage contacting sequences which result in a cumulative DF > 10/sup 4/ are feasible. The reaction rate is constant up … more

Sampling and characterization of sodium-water reaction products

Description: Sodium-water reaction products (SWRP) which had accumulated in the bottom of the reaction products tank (RPT) of the Large Leak Test Rig (LLTR) were sampled and characterized. Analysis showed that the SWRP consisted of NaOH, Na/sub 2/O, NaH, and Na, as expected, in varying proportions. The unreacted sodium in the samples examined ranged from 32 to 60% by weight. The SWRP reacts (dissolves) rapidly and completely with ethanol, and somewhat less rapidly and completely with Dowanol PM. A magnetic,… more

Research on alkaline zinc secondary electrodes with emphasis on model testing. Final report, June 15, 1976-August 31, 1979

Description: The goal of this work was to obtain information useful in the improvement of life and performance of alkaline secondary cells utilizing porous zinc electrodes. Toward this end, experiments designed to test predictions of the most sophisticated mathematical models of the porous zinc electrode were performed. This approach is based on the conviction that the surest way to realize a significantly longer-lived zinc electrode is through better understanding of the electrode gained through the intera… more

(Preoxidation cleaning optimization for crystalline silicon)

Description: A series of controlled experiments has been performed in Sandia's Photovoltaic Device Fabrication Laboratory to evaluate the effect of various chemical surface treatments on the recombination lifetime of crystalline silicon wafers subjected to a high-temperature dry oxidation. From this series of experiments we have deduced a relatively simple yet effective cleaning sequence. We have also evaluated the effect of different chemical damage-removal etches for improving the recombination lifetime a… more

DISSOLUTION OF BeO-AND Al$sub 2$O$sub 3$-BASE REACTOR FUEL ELEMENTS. PART I

Description: Aqueous methods for recovering uranium from BeO- and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/- base gas-cooled-reactor fuel elements are being evaluated. Two methods for processing Hastelloy-X--clad pelletized BeO-base fuels containing 60 to 70% UO/ sub 2/, such as the GCRE and MGCR, seem feasible. One method involves mechanical stripping or chopping of the cladding followed by leaching of the uranium from the fuel pellets with boiling 6-l3M HNO/sub 3/. In the other method the cladding and UO/sub 2/ are dissolved in … more

Project for laboratory study for removal of organic sulfur from coal. Quarterly technical progress report

Description: The Gravimelt Process was extended to the desulfurization of ordinary mine-cleaned Kentucky No. 11 coal obtained from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Eight process runs were made resulting in reduction of the sulfur content from a starting 2.7 lbs S/10/sup 6/ Btu to a mean of 0.475 lbs S/10/sup 6/ Btu, (0.95 lbs SO/sub 2//10/sup 6/ Btu) for an average 82% sulfur reduction. The effect of utilization of molten sodium hydroxide alone vs molten mixed potassium and sodium hydroxide was investigated … more

Cycle-life improvement of Zn/NiOOH cells by the addition of Ca(OH) sub 2 to the zinc electrode

Description: The addition of Ca(OH){sub 2} to the zinc electrode of Zn/NiOOH cells was investigated in order to determine its effect on reducing the rate of Zinc redistribution. Cells containing 0, 10, 25, and 40 mol% Ca(OH){sub 2} in the zinc electrode were constructed and tested. Ca(OH){sub 2} was found to form a calcium zincate complex with the zincate-supersaturated KOH solution created during the discharge half-cycle. As Ca(OH){sub 2} is insoluble in the electrolyte, the formation of this complex (cont… more

Biological conversion of organic refuse to methane. Final report, July 1, 1973--November 30, 1976

Description: In order to predict accurately the cost of producing methane from urban refuse, studies were initiated on the dewatering of the fermentor residue and the disposal of the residue from the system. Results of the research are reported under the following subject headings: fermentation system; rheological properties of reactor slurry; filterability of reactor effluent; residue dewatering--vacuum filtration; settleability of solids in the reactor effluent; settleability of sludges from centrate trea… more

Determination of surface oxide compositions on Alloy 600 using Rutherford backscattering

Description: The surface composition of oxides formed on Alloy 600 under conditions similar to those in the primary side of PWR heat exchangers has been studied as a function of potential using Rutherford backscattering and proton inelastic scattering. Electropolished samples of Alloy 600 were exposed at several potentials to a solution of 0.18M H/sub 3/BO/sub 3/(2000 ppM B) with 0.28M LiOH (1.4 ppM Li) at 300/sup 0/C for 450 hours. The potentials relative to an internal hydrogen electrode ranged from -.09 … more

Surface and bulk vibrations in ion-implanted amorphous silica

Description: Infrared reflection spectroscopy (IRS) has been used to identify the Si-O vibrational mode and confirm previous assignments of Si-OH, and Si-OD vibrational modes in porous amorphous silica implanted with heavy ions and with H/sup +/ and D/sup +/ ions. The Si-O stretching mode (approx. 1015 cm/sup -1/) is produced by the damage cascade and is seen in all implanted bulk silicas as well as in porous silica. Implantation of porous silica with H/sup +/ and D/sup +/ ions produces bands at approx. 985… more

GC/MS characterization of condensable tars in the output stream of a stirred fixed-bed gasifier

Description: The output stream of the stirred fixed-bed gasifier at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center was sampled for total entrained material. A major portion of the entrained material, in addition to particles, is condensable tar that is subsequently removed from the process gas by wet scrubbing. Characterization of the entrained materials, specifically the tar, is important to establish contaminant levels and to evaluate performance of downstream cleanup units. Samples of tars were collected from t… more

Hot corrosivity of coal gasification products on gas turbine alloys. Summary report, 15 April 1978-15 November 1979

Description: The results of this investigation have produced mechanisms for the hot corrosion of a number of pure metals and alloys in the types of atmospheres likely to be obtained in turbines using coal conversion products as fuel. The results of these mechanistic studies suggest the following conclusions regarding application of alloys in these situations: (1) Simple Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/-forming alloys of both Co and Ni have good hot corrosion resistance to most of the deposits likely to form in turbines bu… more

Processing of oil shale in molten hydroxides

Description: Scoping experiments to determine bounds on a possible process for producing fuel hydrocarbons from oil shale by pyrolysis in a bath of molten Na, Li, and K hydroxides have been done. The process can be carried out at relatively low temperatures, 200 to 225/sup 0/C, requires the presence of water and oxygen, and gives hydrocarbon and organic acid products, apparently free of sulfur and nitrogen. A mechanism of oxidation of kerogen at heteroatoms and other functional groups, followed by decarboxy… more
