TCT hybrid preconceptual blanket design studies

Description: The conceptual design of a tokamak fusion-fission (hybrid) reactor, which produces electric power and fissile material, has been performed in a cooperative effort between Princeton's Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Battelle's Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL). PPPL, who had overall project lead responsibility, designed the fusion driver system. Its core consists of a tokamak plasma maintained in the two-component torus (TCT) mode by both D and T beams and having a single null poloidal d… more

Cause of pitting in beryllium

Description: Light microscopy, bare-film radiography, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, electron microprobe and physical testing were used to examine beryllium specimens exhibiting a stratified, pitted, pattern after chemical milling. The objective was to find the cause of this pattern. Specimens were found to have voids in excess of density specification allowances. These voids are attributed, at least in part, to the sublimation of beryllium fluoride during the vacuum hot pressing operation. The origin of … more

Corrosion Behavior of Reactor Materials in Fluoride Salt Mixtures

Description: Molten fluoride salts, because of their radiation stability and ability to contain both Th and U, offer important advantages as high-temperature fuel solutions for nuclear reactors and as media suitable for nuclear fuel processing. Both applications have stimulated experimental and theoretical studies of the corrosion processes by which molten salt mixtures attack potential reactor materials. Corrosion experiments with fluoride salts which were conducted in support of the Molten-Salt Reactor E … more

Phoenix I energy extraction experiment

Description: Energy extraction experiments are reported for the Phoenix I amplifier driven by a discharge-initiated oscillator-preamplifier system operating on mixtures of either SF/sub 6/-HI or SF/sub 6/-C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ and an electron-beam-initiated intermediate amplifer (lambda-3) fueled with H/sub 2/ and F/sub 2/ mixtures. When the oscillator-preamplifier system operated with mixtures of SF/sub 6/-HI the input spectrum to the Phoenix I amplifier contained approx. 28 P-branch vibrational-rotational line… more

RIMS diagnostics for laser desorption/laser ablation

Description: Laser desorption mass spectrometry is a useful method for interrogating materials and events at or near surfaces. Laser desorption/ablation combined with Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) provides a powerful tool to obtain information on chemical composition and speciation and, in some cases, internal and translational energy distributions. The application of this technique to the interrogation of materials and interfaces is discussed for several systems, including the analysis of c… more

Sodium Fluozirconate Precipitation Process for Zirconium Fuels. Part 1. Laboratory Development

Description: Precipitation, evaporation, and extraction feed preparation conditions are established for the removal of zirconium and fluoride from fuel dissolver product solutions by the addition of sodium formate. A sparingly soluble complex fluozirconate is formed. Ninety-five to 99% of the zirconium and fluoride is separated from the uranium losses of 0.1% or less. Chemical material balances, based on experimental data, were developed for two flowsheets. In one flowsheet, sufficient nitric acid is added … more

Manual of analytical methods for the Industrial Hygiene Chemistry Laboratory

Description: This Manual is compiled from techniques used in the Industrial Hygiene Chemistry Laboratory of Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The procedures are similar to those used in other laboratories devoted to industrial hygiene practices. Some of the methods are standard; some, modified to suit our needs; and still others, developed at Sandia. The authors have attempted to present all methods in a simple and concise manner but in sufficient detail to make them readily usable. I… more

Investigation of breached depleted UF sub 6 cylinders

Description: In June 1990, during a three-site inspection of cylinders being used for long-term storage of solid depleted UF{sub 6}, two 14-ton cylinders at Portsmouth, Ohio, were discovered with holes in the barrel section of the cylinders. An investigation team was immediately formed to determine the cause of the failures and their impact on future storage procedures and to recommend corrective actions. Subsequent investigation showed that the failures most probably resulted from mechanical damage that oc… more

Dielectric strengths of new gases and gas mixtures

Description: It is emphasized that the most effective gaseous dielectrics are gas mixtures with components chosen on the basis of fundamental physicochemical knowledge, especially on low-energy electron-molecule interactions. On the basis of such lnowledge, especially on electron attachment and electron slowing down, a number of new gases and gas mixtures have been found with breakdown strengths superior to pure SF/sub 6/. These include the unitary gases c-C/sub 4/F/sub 8/ (perfluorocyclobutane), C/sub 4/F/… more

MHD compressor---expander conversion system integrated with GCR inside a deployable reflector

Description: This work originates from the proposal MHD Compressor-Expander Conversion System Integrated with a GCR Inside a Deployable Reflector''. The proposal concerned an innovative concept of nuclear, closed-cycle MHD converter for power generation on space-based systems in the multi-megawatt range. The basic element of this converter is the Power Conversion Unit (PCU) consisting of a gas core reactor directly coupled to an MHD expansion channel. Integrated with the PCU, a deployable reflector provides… more
