Particle identification in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

Description: The role of particle identification (PID) in both fixed-target and colliding-beam studies of ultrarelativistic nuclear (URN) collisions is examined. The demands placed on the PID systems by peculiarities of URN collisions, such as large multiplicities and the need for simultaneous measurement of a number of observables, are discussed. Calorimetric and optical beam diagnostics on the LBL 120-keV neutral beam test facility

Description: The 120-keV Neutral Beam Test Facility at LBL is fitted with several types of instrumentation to determine the properties of the 10- to 15-A hydrogen and deuterium beams produced in this facility. These include a neutral particle dump for measuring the temperature profile generated by the beam, and a fixed and a moveable ion dump to measure the temperature profiles generated by the various ion components after they have been swept out of the neutral beam by a bending magnet. Description: The mean heat capacity of a sample of powdered beryllium carbide, a possible moderator material for a nuclear reactor, was determined as a function of temperature. Enthalpy measurement of coal-derived liquids. Quarterly technical progress report, July-September 1980

Description: Equipment modifications to a Freon 11 boil-off type calorimeter are described. The calorimetric system was used to measure the enthalpies of thiophene experimentally. Data were taken over a temperature range of 100/sup 0/F to 750/sup 0/F at pressures of 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 825.9 (the critical), 1000, and 1500 psia. Doublet III neutral beam injector test tank cryopanel design

Description: A simple condensing cryopanel has been designed for the Doublet III neutral beam test tank with a 320,000 liters per second pumping capacity for hydrogen. This maintains a vacuum in the test tank which simulates the Doublet III vessel, 1.3 x 10/sup -3/ Pa (approx.10/sup -5/ torr). The hydrogen gas load comes from the beam striking the test tank calorimeter and amounts to about 7.2 torr liters per second. Particle reflection and TFTR neutral beam diagnostics

Description: Determination of two critical neutral beam parameters, power and divergence, are affected by the reflection of a fraction of the incident energy from the surface of the measuring calorimeter. On the TFTR Neutral Beam Test Stand, greater than 30% of the incident power directed at the target chamber calorimeter was unaccounted for. Description: During a span of 640 days, a periodicity of 1.5158 +- 0.0008 days was discovered in successive heater equilibria on Calorimeter No. 127. Measurements were taken at 12-h intervals, with occasional changes of exactly 3 or 6 h in the schedule of measurements. This schedule eliminated all other possible periods except a period of 0.150156 days. Description: Automatic reaction calorimeters were developed. Enthalpies of hydration or hydrolysis were determined for polyoxygenated methanes, ketals, acetals, orthoesters, and alkenes. Trifluoroacetolysis of alkenes was carried out. Enthalpies of acetolysis and combustion of cyclopropane derivatives were also determined.
