TCT hybrid preconceptual blanket design studies

Description: The conceptual design of a tokamak fusion-fission (hybrid) reactor, which produces electric power and fissile material, has been performed in a cooperative effort between Princeton's Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Battelle's Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL). PPPL, who had overall project lead responsibility, designed the fusion driver system. Its core consists of a tokamak plasma maintained in the two-component torus (TCT) mode by both D and T beams and having a single null poloidal d… more

X-ray measurements of stresses and defects in EFG and large grained polycrystalline silicon ribbons. First quarterly report

Description: The first model of a modified Bond goniometer has been built and tested for the precision measurement of interplanar spacings in Si-single crystals. A change in interplanar spacing ..delta..d/d approximately = to +- 10/sup -5/ can be detected which corresponds to surface stresses of the order of +- 1000 psi. A second version of the goniometer is being assembled incorporating a removable microscope for precision alignment of the Si-strip into the primary X-ray beam.

Coal Technology Program. Progress report for November 1977

Description: A block of Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal and a block of Wyodak subbituminous coal were pyrolyzed under reducing gas in support of in situ gasification. Information from previously completed block pyrolysis of bituminous coal under an argon atmosphere show that differences in evolved gas result from differences in heating rates. Compared to block pyrolysis at 0.3 C/sup 0//min, block pyrolysis at 3 C/sup 0//min produces less gas but gas with a higher heating value, yielding a higher overall pyr… more

Ultrasonic inspection techniques for two weld closures proposed for RSSF waste storage casks

Description: One method being considered for interim storage of high-level radioactive waste materials is to place these materials in large sealed stainless steel canisters and subsequently store these canisters in a second sealed steel storage cask. Weld procedures are proposed as the closure or seal for these vessels. Inspection of these closures to assure initial and long-term integrity of the closure welds presents a challenge to nondestructive testing. The environment is thermally (400 to 1000/sup 0/F)… more

Array automated assembly: Phase 2. Quarterly report

Description: An analysis was made of cost trade-offs for shaping modified square wafers from cylindrical crystals. For reasonably expectable silicon and sheet costs, the optimum shape will be nearer a circle than a square. Tests were conducted of the effectiveness of texture etching for removal of surface damage on sawed wafers. Four glass systems have survived preliminary screening tests for use as edge masking dielectrics. These include beta-spodumen, MgO-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ borosilicate, baria and titania … more

LOFT experimental measurements uncertainties analyses. Volume XVI. LOFT three-beam gamma densitometer system

Description: The magnitudes of various uncertainties in the loss-of-fluid test gamma densitometer measurements have been estimated. The dominant error in the estimate of the density profile and the average density is the extrapolation from the three chordal average density values to the total density profile. The primary uncertainty in each chordal average density measurement is the random noise inherent in the radiation process.

Application of a microprocessor system to stream monitoring

Description: Low-level liquid wastes originating from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are discharged, after treatment, into White Oak Creek, which is a small tributary of the Clinch River located in East Tennessee. Samples of White Oak Creek discharges are collected at White Oak Dam by a continuous digital proportional water sampler and analyzed weekly for radioactivity. The sampler contains a control system with a microprocessor that has been programmed to solve nonlinear weir equations. This syst… more

Investigation and evaluation of geopressured geothermal wells

Description: This group of wells-of-opportunity (WOOs) consists of four reentry candidates located in Southern Louisiana. The four Louisiana wells have penetrated a thick section of deep hot and geopressured Miocene or Oligocene sand. Thus the geologic risk is essentially eliminated. Each of these wells has been abandoned. Particular emphasis was placed on selecting wells which are reported to have been left in such a mechanical condition that the risk of reentry operations is low. Every effort will be made… more
