Diffuser augmentation of wind turbines

Description: Wind tunnel investigation of models of two diffuser design concepts is directed toward unconventional, very short, cost-effective configurations. One approach uses the energetic external wind to prevent separation of the diffuser's internal boundary layer. Another method used high lift airfoil contours for the diffuser wall shape. Diffuser model tests have indicated almost a doubling of wind power extraction capability for DAWTs compared to conventional turbines. Economic studies of DAWTs have … more

Evaluation of alkaline etchants for printed wiring boards

Description: A propietary, alkaline copper-ammonia complex etchant was evaluated for use in production of printed wiring boards (PWBs). A better etchant than the standard chromic-sulfuric acid etchant was needed because of the numerous disadvantages associated with use of the latter. Testing of the alkaline etchant involved etching identical circuit patterns with both etchants, micro-sectioning samples, and measuring conductor widths. There was little dimensional difference between the two systems. Inspecti… more

Update on the development of 120-keV multi-megawatt neutral beam source

Description: The next generation of U.S. fusion experiments, which includes TFTR, MFTF, and Doublet III, will utilize neutral-beam injection for plasma heating. TFTR, for example, desires 20 MW of 120-keV deuterium atoms in pulses of 0.5-sec duration at 5-minute intervals from a total of 12 individual neutral-beam modules. A discussion is given of some of the design details of a 15-A, 120-keV, 0.5-sec ion-source module that has recently been built to test design concepts for TFTR sources, and some of the fe… more

Penetration of HEPA filters by alpha recoil aerosols

Description: Tests at Oak Ridge National Laboratory confirmed that alpha-emitting particulate matter does penetrate high-efficiency filter medium, identical to that used in HEPA filters, much more effectively than do non-radioactive or beta-gamma active aerosols. Filter retention efficiencies drastically lower than the 99.97 percent quoted for ordinary particulate matter have been observed with /sup 212/Pb, /sup 253/Es, and /sup 238/Pu sources, indicating that the phenomenon is common to all of these and pr… more

Materials Science Division coal technology seventh quarterly report, April--June 1976. [Gasification plant materials]

Description: Preliminary analysis of test results of 15 ceramic refractories for slagging gasifiers indicates that the magnesia-chrome, chrome-bonded alumina, and fusion-cast spinel bricks have substantially better abrasion-corrosion resistance than the other compositions. Thermal-shock testing has indicated that resistance to spalling of ceramic coatings can be improved with the use of graded alumina-chromia and magnesia-alumina multilayer coatings. The first corrosion-erosion test run for a total of 100-h… more

Investigation of fracture in pressurized gas metal arc welded beryllium

Description: Premature failures during proof testing of pressurized-gas-metal-arc (PGMA) welded beryllium assemblies were investigated. The failures were almost entirely within the beryllium (a forming grade, similar to HP-10 or S-240), close to and parallel to the weld interface. The aluminum-silicon weld filler metal deposit was not centered in the weld groove in the failed assemblies, and failure occurred on the side of the weld opposite the bias in the weld deposit. Tensile tests of welded samples demon… more

PDP-11 debugging tool. [Stand-alone hardware device for debugging hardware and software problems]

Description: Debugging a PDP-11 system can be quite frustrating; programs like ODT are helpful, but they must be integrated into existing software. Also, ODT adds overhead to the system, since it is interrupt driven through software traps. This characteristic makes it dangerous to use in real-time systems. A stand-alone hardware device was developed which can be connected to a PDP-11 running any software package. It has most of the features of ODT plus some unique features. Since it operates in a real-time,… more
