Construction and testing of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility magnets

Description: This paper describes the construction and testing of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility superconducting magnet set. Construction of the first Yin Yang magnet was started in 1978. And although this particular magnet was later modified, the final construction of these magnets was not completed until 1985. When completed these 42 magnets weighed over 1200 tonnes and had a maximum stored energy of approximately 1200 MJ at full field. Together with power supplies, controls and liquid nitrogen radiation… more

A TRANSISTORIZED ALPHA COUNTER FOR AN ALPHA GAUGE

Description: A transistorized instrument prototype was designed and constructed to replace a vacuum-tube instrument in an alpha gauge, which measures the thickness density of gases. The instrument amplifies, shapes, discriminates, and counts alpha pulses from a Au-Si surface-barrier detector exposed to an alpha source in a gas-filled chamber. The circuit consists of a charge-sensitive preamplifier, a main amplifier with pulse clipping, a Schmitt trigger, a diode pump, and a count rate meter. Preliminary tes… more

Thin polymer icemaker development and test program

Description: We have constructed and tested a small device to produce ice in ice/water mixtures using a cold fluid as the heat sink. The device is a flexible heat exchanger constructed from a thin film of a suitable polymer. When filled with circulating liquid coolant the heat exchanger consists of an inflated series of parallel tubes; ice forms on the outside in complementary half cylinders. When the circulation is cut off, gravity drains the coolant and the static head of the water bath crushes the tubes,… more

Fluidized-bed waste-heat recovery system development. Semiannual report, February 1, 1983-July 31, 1983

Description: A major energy loss in industry is the heat content of the flue gases from industrial process heaters. One effective way to utilize this energy, which is applicable to all processes, is to preheat the combustion air from the process heater. Although recuperators are available to preheat this air when the flue gases are clean, recuperators to recover the heat from dirty and corrosive flue gases do not exist. The Fluidized-Bed Waste-Heat Recovery (FBWHR) System is designed to preheat this combust… more

Dimensional Behavior of the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor Fuel Element at Elevated Temperatures

Description: The Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor (EGCR) fuel assemblies consist of a cluster of seven fuel elements contained in a graphite sleeve. Each element is composed of hollow cylindrical UO/sub 2/ pellets encapsulated in a type 304 stainless steel tube. The dimensional behavior of the fuel element was determined in an apparatus which simulated the thermal conditions predicted for the EGCR. Particular emphasis was placed on determining the relationship between the fuel temperature and axial expansion… more

Laboratory-Scale Demonstration of the Fused Salt Volatility Process

Description: The feasibility of processing enriched irradiated zirconium--uranium alloy fuel by the fused salt-fluoride volatility procedure has been demonstrated in laboratory tests with fuel having a burnup of over 10%. Uranium recoveries were greater than 99% and decontamination factors for radioactive fission products were 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 6/. The UF/sub 6/ product contained significant quantities of nonradioactive impurities; additional work in this area is needed. (auth)

Cycle-life improvement of Zn/NiOOH cells by the addition of Ca(OH) sub 2 to the zinc electrode

Description: The addition of Ca(OH){sub 2} to the zinc electrode of Zn/NiOOH cells was investigated in order to determine its effect on reducing the rate of Zinc redistribution. Cells containing 0, 10, 25, and 40 mol% Ca(OH){sub 2} in the zinc electrode were constructed and tested. Ca(OH){sub 2} was found to form a calcium zincate complex with the zincate-supersaturated KOH solution created during the discharge half-cycle. As Ca(OH){sub 2} is insoluble in the electrolyte, the formation of this complex (cont… more

Calmac Ice Storage Test Report

Description: The Ice Storage Test Facility (ISTF) is designed to test commercial ice storage systems. Calmac provided a storage tank equipped with coils designed for use with a secondary fluid system. The Calmac ice storage system was tested over a wide range of operating conditions. Measured system performance during charging was similar to that reported by the manufacturer. Both the measured average and minimum brine temperatures were in close agreement with Calmac's literature values, and the ability to … more

A standard test set for numerical approximations to the shallow water equations in spherical geometry

Description: A suite of seven test cases is proposed for the evaluation of numerical methods intended for the solution of the shallow water equations in spherical geometry. The shallow water equations exhibit the major difficulties associated with the horizontal dynamical aspects of atmospheric modeling on the spherical earth. These cases are designed for use in the evaluation of numerical methods proposed for climate modeling and to identify the potential trade-offs which must always be made in numerical m… more

High-resolution CT system for elemental mapping

Description: The performance of a low-temperature CCD camera for application in computed tomography (CT) was tested on beamline II-3 at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL). In the present system, transmitted x-rays are converted to visible light on a phosphor-coated optical face plate. This light illuminates a thermoelectrically cooled CCD, which is operated as a charge counting device. By modulating the energy of the x-ray beam, we can obtain elemental and chemical-state information about … more
