DEVELOPMENT OF RING-JOINT FLANGES FOR USE IN THE HRE-2

Description: Ring-joint flanges were studied in thermal-cycle tests as part of the development work associated with Homogeneous Reactor Experiment No. 2 (HRE-2). The purpose of this study was to provide criteria for design, installation, and operation of joints that would remain leaktight under reactor operating temperatures and pressures. Joints ranging from 1/2 in., l500 lb to 4 in., 2500 lb and with various initial bolt loadings were cycled between room temperature and 636 deg F. It was demonstrated that… more

Experimental determination of lower plenum ECC injection effectiveness

Description: The effectiveness of lower plenum emergency core coolant (ECC) injection during a double ended offset shear cold leg break loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) was investigated experimentally in a small-scale model of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). In order to determine relative merit of the lower plenum injection concept to mitigate the severity of a large break LOCA, data from lower plenum injection experiments were compared to data from an experiment in the Semiscale Mod-3 sytem in which cold… more

Evaluation of refractory materials for a nuclear waste incinerator

Description: An experiment to find a suitable refractory lining for a nuclear waste incinerator has been completed. Eleven brick and six castable products were analyzed by optical and scanning microscopy. All the materials were fashioned into cup shapes and subjected to temperatures ranging from 800 to 1200/sup 0/C for as long as six weeks. Some of the cups were charged weekly with pellets made from ash materials that would contact an incinerator liner. Refractory products containing a high percentage of al… more

Fabrication and evaluation of transmissive multilayer optics for 8 keV x rays

Description: We have made and tested several sliced multilayer structures which can function as transmissive x-ray optical elements (diffraction gratings, zone plates, and phase gratings) at 8 keV. Our automated multilayer sputtering system is optimized to sputter layers of arbitrary thickness for very large total deposits at high deposition rates. Diffraction patterns produced by the multilayer devices closely match theoretical predictions. Such transmissive optics have the potential for wide application i… more

Discrimination Report: ESTCP UXO Discrimination Study, ESTCPProject #MM-0437

Description: The FY06 Defense Appropriation contains funding for the 'Development of Advanced, Sophisticated, Discrimination Technologies for UXO Cleanup' in the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program. In 2003, the Defense Science Board observed: 'The problem is that instruments that can detect the buried UXOs also detect numerous scrap metal objects and other artifacts, which leads to an enormous amount of expensive digging. Typically 100 holes may be dug before a real UXO is unearthed! Th… more

Portable, Low-cost NMR with Laser-Lathe Lithography Produced

Description: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is unsurpassed in its ability to non-destructively probe chemical identity. Portable, low-cost NMR sensors would enable on-site identification of potentially hazardous substances, as well as the study of samples in a variety of industrial applications. Recent developments in RF microcoil construction (i.e. coils much smaller than the standard 5 mm NMR RF coils), have dramatically increased NMR sensitivity and decreased the limits-of-detection (LOD). We are using… more

LLNL Summer 2007 Internship Experience

Description: Since the 2001 anthrax attacks involving the US postal service, there have been increased efforts to study more advanced methods of decontamination and detection of viable Bacillus anthracis before and after decontamination efforts. Current methods for sample processing and viability analysis are low throughput ({approx}30-40 per day) requiring several manual steps, with confirmed results obtained days later. The group I am working with has developed more rapid, high throughput methods using au… more

Both vapor-dominated and liquid-dominated sources were considered within the electric power generation category. The source characteristics, H/sub 2/S control requirements, and applicable technologies are discussed for the two geothermal sources. An evaluation of the applicable control technology indicates that there are three major approaches for H/sub 2/S removal. These ar… more

Performance tests of the radial outflow reaction turbine for geothermal applications

Description: A unique pure reaction turbine, for geothermal applications, has been developed. This radial outflow reaction turbine (RORT) is designed specifically to produce power from the expansion of saturated or compressed liquid at temperatures of less than 180/sup 0/C. In the tests reported here the highest efficiency measured was 32.7%, clearly below the peak efficiency for this small machine. Extrapolations to larger machines indicate that an efficiency near 50% is a credible goal, an attractive perf… more

A simple cantilevered mirror for focussing synchrotron radiation

Description: A large cantilevered mirror was constructed to focus the vertical divergence from a synchrotron radiation source. The advantages of this mirror are its compactness, simple bending device, simplicity of construction, and good thermal contact to structures outside the vacuum. The central portion of the mirror is supported with variable loading springs to reduce gravitational sag. The figure and thermal stability of the mirror have proven to be excellent, though the focusing is limited by the roug… more
